TYPE OF QUESTION: math (functions)
YOUR QUESTION: if f(2) = 3 and g(1) = 3, determine the value of f-1 [g(1)]. (f-1 refers to the inverse)
i tried this and got 2 as the answer, although i'm pretty sure i'm not doing it right; thanks in advance for the help!!
Whenever you have a function inside a function, start from the inside and work your way out.
In the case of this problem, g(1) is the function on the inside, so that's the function you work with first. It's given that g(1) = 3, so you can replace g(1) into your function to obtain f-1(3).
In inverse functions, putting in your original y-value into the inverse function creates your x-value. In the case of f(x), the x-value is 2 and the y-value is 3. Therefore, putting your y-value (3) into f-1 (inverse of f(x)), creates your original x-value, 2. From f-1(3), we get the original x-value, which is 2.
So are correct. c: Hope this was helpful!
