Help understanding my assignment.

Is this allowed? Sorry to mods if it isn't. I don't see how it would be spam. XD

So this writing assignment in world civ is confusing me. I was wondering if anyone could help me understand what they are wanting me to do. They are asking for me to compare and contrast the process in which these countries gained land? This is how I interpreted it but I'm halfway through my reading assignments and it seems the only country to undergo enough change to write about is Germany.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, numerous societies underwent transformations that ended with the creation of modern states. However, these transformations differed everywhere and often included significant conflict.

Choose two cases from the list below. Compare and contrast their experiences with these processes. Be sure to identify areas of overlap as well as difference.

Germany
Japan
Mexico
Russia
United States

I believe you have it correct, it wants you to compare the ways in which countries became countries and expanded their amount of claimed land.

I think the United States is a good example. The US first took over the British colonies of the east coast, and expanded gradually after the Revolutionary War. Some territories were bought from other countries, such as France's Louisiana territory, Russia's Alaska territory, and the entire southwest owned by Mexico (including California, Nevada, Utah, most of Arizona, parts of Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico, and eventually Texas).

You'll just have to look up the countries in your list to see how they acquired the land they have on maps today.

Our readings for this assignment are about the Mexican Revolution, Russian Revolution, World War 1, and Cold War. I don't think the US acquired any land during these times. XD

I looked up "state" and found this definition
a nation or territory considered as an organized political community under one government.

so now I think they mean to talk about how they became to be under their current government? It makes more sense anyway since the wars listed weren't about acquiring land but about political stuff. I'm still not 100% sure. I really wish I had time to message my teachers but they probably won't message me back until Monday. XD

Yeah, that doesn't talk about land at all. It sounds more like it's asking about the big changes that the country went through to get to the society/government it is today. Fighting for certain freedoms or government things like voting, sure, maybe boundaries, maybe wars or even civil wars.

It specifically says that the societies were transformed, so it's talking more about the people. Perhaps their culture, their government.

Yep, I'm a dumb. Sorry for my fail. Taking another look at it, I interpret it totally different than I did before. thunderofthedrum is definitely right, I pick up on the word "society" as well.
