exhibit a: the anti-semitic decisions of the captain america writers. if you think that this is okay, that this is something you are allowed to use for shock value, trust me, you are wrong. you are 100% wrong. you are spitting on the very reason this character was created. because this character was created by JEWISH PEOPLE to protest the inaction of the american government towards the genocide of JEWISH PEOPLE, you are thus supporting anti-semitism. marvel, you are supporting hitler. by corrupting this you invalidate the reason this character was created. that means that you're supporting genocide. [and I really thought we had enough of that already with the 2016 presidential election.]

shock value? don't make me laugh. shock value is a plot twist that doesn't imply support for crimes against humanity.



exhibit b: the dr. strange movie. as a southeast asian, I was extremely excited to hear that this was coming. finally, a celebration of asian culture in a superhero film!

except, no, not really.

it's bad enough that beluga cucumber is playing the lead. dr. strange has always been an ethnically ambiguous character, never explicitly stated to be white. it's just kind of assumed that he's white. the thing is, when you've got a white guy who goes to learn asian culture, that's just wrong. "out-asianing the asians" is a trope that's popular but needs to die. like, immediately. you see it in a lot of media: the karate kid, batman, arrow, iron fist, and yeah, dr. strange. asians spend their whole lives training in something, but then along comes a white kid [or a black kid, in the case of the most recent remake of karate kid], and suddenly they learn everything in two weeks and hand the asians their butts. besides being unrealistic, it reinforces the extremely racist idea that white people are just somehow better than people of color. in dr. strange, you, my dear marvel, had the chance to remedy this. guess what? you didn't.

but oh, no, that's so incredibly far from being the worst part. the worst part is when you cast a WHITE WOMAN to play a tibetan monk.

oh, I'm all for strong female characters. that's not the issue here.

the issue is that you thought that yellowface was somehow acceptable.

you know what blackface is, right, marvel? you've never done that. and for good reason. it's beyond racist. it's simply derogatory. but somehow - somehow, in some way - doing the same to an asian character is acceptable.

what you are doing with the dr. strange movie is absolutely disgusting. please, for the love of god, I hope this movie dies a painful, fiery death at the box office, because if we have to suffer through a dr. strange sequel there will be hell to pay.



exhibit c: you are apparently unable to cast diverse characters in movies, marvel. (re: exhibit b, dr. strange.) your tv shows do okay. there's room for improvement, sure, but we have tons of strong female characters and claire temple, who's worth 200 points on her own. but in the movies? forget it. there's a lack of female characters in the avengers. getting better, sure, but the males still outnumber the females by a lot. oh, and the only woc you have ever included in a movie is dr. helen cho. an amazing character, to be sure, one of my favorites, but she vanished after aou. apparently she's avengers tech support now, instead of running her hugely successful lab out of seoul.

because heaven forbid that you have a female character in an independent position, am I right?

and it's great that you have more black characters in cacw. falcon's there. rhodey's there. t'challa is amazing and beautiful. and, of course, there's the black panther movie on the way! [I'm very excited for this - assuming that you don't somehow make the black panther movie revolve around a white character, which is totally possible, because my expectations for you are lower than a pile of cow dung.] that's a good basis for diversity.

except you don't seem to understand that THREE MALE BLACK CHARACTERS DOESN'T EQUAL DIVERSITY.

you've burned your chance on dr. strange. helen cho is now under the command of White Guy tony stark. maybe you'll let chloe bennet into inhumans, but other than that? you're not planning to introduce any other characters of color, are you, marvel?

this isn't even getting into disabled characters, lgbtqa+ characters, etc. because you don't really have those either. [matt's in a tv show. planning to let him into your movies? I didn't think so. and you've erased clint barton's Deafness, so congrats on that.]



in conclusion, marvel, this is why it's so easy to be a dc fan.
