Okay, I'm an avid archer and I use a recurve bow, so maybe I can help.
The string is on the right side, it's not backwards. You just need to string it. I had some considerable trouble stringing my bow when I first got it, because I didn't know how. My dad showed me how so I'll try and describe it to you.
1. String one end of the bow (as you have already) and turn the bow so the stringed limb is on the bottom and the free limb is on top. (Not on the floor; you should be holding the bow upright.)
2. Put the outside of your left foot against the curve of the bottom limb. Then put your right leg through the space in-between the string (which you should be holding upright) and the rest of the bow.
3. Now, using your left foot to keep the bow in place, use your right leg for leverage so you can bend the upper limb of the bow toward the string.
4. Attach and slowly let it up.
Hope that helped! Happy Shooting!
