I don't know if this would count, but my sister will cry at some sounds.. When she was younger she couldn't have toys that made noise because they would upset her, she also would cry at loud noises (such as fireworks, or the loud sounds at a circus). She is also extremely upset by sad music. I have this decoration that you turn around, and it plays a lullaby sounding song, she still cries when she hears it..

As for me, I can't stand when people itch their jeans, or my Mom making sounds with her mouth (she has a bad habit of making weird sounds)...
Best of wishes

Huh. I've never heard of those sounds making people upset but, hey, you never know!

For me, it's mostly repetitive sounds/sights or mouth sounds that anger me. Tapping feet, hands, fingers, pencils/playing with or picking at hair or any sound that comes from the... face region. xD

omg thank you for making this thread
I've been struggling with this since I can think, but it's gotten worse a year ago when we got our dog. he sleeps in my room and I can't stand the lickling when he's cleaning himself with his tongue. it's gotten so bad that I yell at him at night and feel bad about it because it's clearly not his fault. I'm trying to cover my ears, but it doesn't always work because I know he's doing it and my ears will automatically focus on the noise. I also can't stand loud breathing, chewing, drinking noises and all sounds you can do with your tongue, but that's not that important to me right now, I'm more focused on the thing with my dog. I still want him to sleep in my room because I'm training with him and overall, we have a strong bond. i'm afraid to tell my mom about this because I'm scared how she will react. she'll think i'm crazy. is there anything I could do without she thinking I'm insane? I'm 100% sure she hasn't heard of this illness.

I totally understand the thing about your ears focusing on the noise. Once you hear it, there's no 'trying to not hear it' because you'll hear it every time.
And, I wish I could give you better advice but, I haven't had much luck with getting my mom to understand. All I can say is that when someone gets a little angry that you're telling them to stop making the noise they're making or when you feel bad that you're snapping at your dog (I do it too when my dog barks incessantly), just remember: they can stop making the noise, you can't stop being irritated by it. Your dog is licking, he can stop licking easily. You can't help being angered by it. It's not a switch that you can snap, and turn off. Don't feel bad or rude about asking anyone to stop making the noise because they can stop, you can't.
As for telling your mom, I would start it off by saying 'Hey, have you heard of Misophonia? It sounds kind of strange but this is what it is' and let her know what it is and get some feedback. Tell her that it's not incredibly uncommon to have it and that you get angered/aggravated by these things.
Let her know that it's nothing to be immediately worried about as long as you can avoid the sounds whenever possible and that 'misophonia' is just a word for 'hatred of certain sounds' and isn't some extreme mental disorder but should still be taken seriously.

When I told my mom, she first told me to get over it and one day when I told her that I just can't, she told me that I "just liked to say that I had something wrong with me and that I have mental issues". When everyone first hears the word 'Misophonia', it sounds an awful like a disease or major psychological disorder. While it is a disorder, it more-so is a quick way of saying 'certain noises irritate me and sometimes I get irritated more than usual'.

For example, some people get disturbed by the sound of popping knuckles. Misophoniacs may have more obscure trigger sights/sounds and more of them and maybe, more of a reaction to them. That's the difference.

TLDR; When you ask someone to stop and they don't or overplay the fact that they are making the noise, that is extremely harmful to you and very rude of them. You, however, should not feel rude asking someone to stop making a noise that is making you distressed.

Anyway, sorry for the long post. xD

@esspe it's even worse when you ask people nicely to stop and they start doing it twice as loudly to irritate you. it's really, really rude imo because they really don't realize just how horrible it is on your end. and it's really just plain mean tbh

@hipster shibe - Oh my god, I totally agree. My mom was eating wasabi peas and was crunching on them really loud so I just shot her a glare and she full on did it ten times louder. Like, making a joke out of it doesn't make it any better. The sound may not annoy them but it seriously angers me to the point of crying and some people just don't get that.

And that, my friends, is why Misophonia needs more awareness so when someone asks someone to stop making a noise, they stop because they know about the disorder and what it does to people.

Ugh, yes. It's just like: "Wow, would it really kill you to stop for like 20 minutes, 'cause it might to me if you keep it up."...
it really sucks that my headphones keep breaking, because i usually use music to drown that crap out and i can't do that until i get a new ones...

also bringing up the subject of music. does anyone else ever fall in love with a song then realize after like replaying it a few times you start to notice all the gasps and breathing that the singer makes like
omg that has ruined so many songs for me

sorrY i'm ranting about this a bit im just tryin g to get all of this stuff out i don't rly talk about these kinds of things bc people usually just dismiss it so

^ohhhh yes that's happened so many times. i hate the sound of breathing ugh.

i just wanted to rant a bit because this makes so much sense now: i absolutely cannot stand the sound of whispering. it honest to God makes me want to punch the person in the throat ;n; i get so tense and angry and i will literally start crying if it goes on for too long. {games of telephone sucked when i was a kid sigh}

    whISPERING. Gah.
I kept hearing about 'ASMR' and was like, hey, let's go see what the hype is all about.
    Oh. My. God.
Apparently 'soft spoken' ASMR is a thing and asdfghjkl, it makes me want to rip every strand of hair out of my head one by one. They talk close to the camera's microphone and I can hear every dang sound that the moist demon-orifice they call a 'mouth' makes.
No, just, no. I don't need to feel like you're breathing down my neck, kthx.
