Ugh. I mean, really--85% of people weren't abused as a child. It's not that way in real life! I understand a few tragic pasts, but when every single charrie has one....Ugh.
I would very, very much like to point out that that statistic is crap.
Child abuse is horribly common, most cases aren't even reported.
So yes, it is that way in real life.

Overly tragic pasts are an annoyance.
If you character is being chased by a muderer that killed their entire family and foster family that abused them in every which way that I'm probably not going to accept them.
