Or then it is because a RP based solidly on walking around, sniffing, having
no thoughts and reacting on only impulses and what is familiar would be insanely boring.
Disney hasn't "brainwashed us" to think animals have expressions and stuff like that,
it is just super boring to interact and write with characters that are that limited.
Which is why we add human traits - to make the game more interesting for us, seeing
as most of the time our brain capacity goes higher than 'wake up - sniff butt - drink water'.
I'm not saying that animals can't do human-like things. Of course if there wasn't animated interaction in animal RPs, it would be boring. But it's perfectly easy to write about emotions and such
without facial expressions.
Two words: body language.
Happy? Pricked ears, wagging tail. Sad? Ears low, drooping tail. Dominant? Ears and tail held high. Submissive? Ears low as well, tail between the legs.
That was using wolves as an example, though. They are extremely simple to describe using body language, since they have ears and tails. Eyes are useful as well. And posture.
I just wish that people on here would keep an open mind, because if you've ever seen wolves you must know that the dominant and submissive male are very apparent. But wolves don't have emotions, so...not so much happy and sad.
