I don't know if it's slack roleplaying, or they're just trying to give their character an edgy quality.
But it's such a prolific thing, do you know how many RPers I've run into that have characters that have murdered parents?
I CANNOT COUNT THINE NUMBER.
Do you know how many people I've run into in real life that have both parents murdered?
NONE.
ZERO.
ZIP.
NIL.
I haven't even found a person with one parent murdered!
In every RP I've ever been in, someone's character has had their parents murdered.
In fact, I joined an RP where pretty much every character had their parent killed off.
I, for one, have never stooped so low.

Thou has amused me.

But seriously, I agree, it's ridiculous the amount of parents who are unknown or killed. I mean, I know you just made that character without a thought of their parents, but stop for a moment to think about them.
Or at least think of a more creative reason as to how/why they died. Maybe they were carried off to a zoo. Maybe they were wanted criminals for escaping from their former pack which was brutal and never let anyone leave, and so they sought out to kill your parents and succeeded. Or maybe their meat was just burned alive on a stick on a campfire, or Sarah Palin murdered them. Those were so easy to come up with I could cry. If you can't think of something more then they were killed when [charactername] was young or [charactername] killed them, don't mention parents at all.
