people who think that small animals - merely because of their short lifespans - aren't worthy of being taken vets for proper medical care

no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no ding dong you are wrong you are awful you are terrible whenever you have any sort of pet it is your duty to take care of it because you have made a silent contract with that animal to protect it and provide for it and in return you get its companionship. this does not matter whether it is a fish or a gerbil or a dog or a horse because it is the same contract. to let an animal knowingly suffer and die slowly when it could have a swift, humane, and painless death at a vet's hands is animal cruelty. there are no other words for it. letting an animal suffer that way is animal cruelty. and quite frankly it makes my blood boil to see.
