Things That Annoy You (V. 72)

What annoys me?

Well, a good number of things, probably much more than is healthy. Or necessary.
But today, let's focus on the small, seemingly petty difference between the words 'want' and 'need.'

Now.
These words are, indeed, very similar. But when you look closer, when you dissect them, when you really think about it, there's a huge chasm between the two.

Now, remember: I will not be consulting a professional dictionary, thesaurus, or website. This is a rant, after all.

Anyways, as I was saying...
You see, people these days are using the term 'need' too much.

"I need this expensive outfit."

"I need to have this accessory!"

"I need to have a certain pet!"

See, you do not need these objects. You simply desire them. You want them.

However, they are nowhere near essential for your existence, unless you somehow have some exotic, rare, and unheard-of disease that somehow requires that you must have a posh and luxurious life. Which is highly unlikely.

Moving on...

The term "need" is a term that should be used for something that is of utmost importance to your body. It's what you must have in order to stay alive. For example, you need water, food, warmth (including clothing), and oxygen - among others. These are things you need. They are just the bare minimum of the needed essence.

So, this means that you do not need that five-dollar bottle of water that comes from the snow on the top of Mt. Everest and is infused with the laughter of babies.

You do not need that extra-large serving of fries, with that large vanilla milkshake to top off that double cheeseburger with extra bacon (In fact, it would be best if everyone steered clear of that).

You do not need that $200 designer top from Prada, on top of those super-skinny-but-really-stylish $100 jeans, covering those $400 high heels that make your feet ache, and you certainly don't need that $2000 purse from Gucci, or Louis Vuitton, or Prada (again), along with that $500 scarf.

You do not need those things.
You want those things.
They are not necessary.
They're simply upgrades and cute little trinkets that you happened to buy.

Do you see the difference, now?
Pretty big difference.

(Oh, and by the way, you most certainly, do not need a bunch of pixels.

Again, they're just something you sorely want.)

I really don't want to learn how to ride a motorcycle this summer. I rather stick to driving my SUV. I had a bad experience at a motorcycle class. You expect me to be able to handle a motorcycle? The one I was taking over to the other parking lot was leaning into me and almost was going to fall on top of me. I always had a fear of riding them because idiots that don't bother of looking out the window when changing lanes.

I can't begin to fathom some rules. They annoy me to no possible end and drive me into a ditch. How can one say that mentioning suicide and self harm is against the rules? That is like rounding up anyone who is down on their rear and shoving them into the corner as some unacceptable monster. You cannot try to cover up an issue that is only growing in the world today. Some people need help and the internet is the only place they can find it. Some people are too afraid to talk to anyone face to face, so they turn to a friendly community where no one will know their real name. And, yet, they are kicked aside like a horrible part of society.

I don't know if one can truly understand this if they have not dealt with these thoughts them self. Where every little word can push you over the edge and all you want is someone to listen and to be there. How much more disrespectful can you get than to ban the talk of such a serious matter that is truly something of life or death? It happens in our world and hiding that will help nothing. If anything, masking it behind a wall of indifference will only cause the problem to worsen. It discourages seeking help for fear of consequence.

How many people here suffer from depression? I imagine quite a number. I know I'm one. I know that I have been so inclined to cause myself pain just to feel something than a sinking sorrow and emptiness. You know how it feels to have someone say that my hardest times in life can't be discussed? Think about having something that is bothering you, tearing you down, and making you someone else, on your mind constantly, but you can't speak a word about it? You aren't allowed to seek help on a site you feel comfortable. You aren't allowed to vent. All you can do is bundle it up inside, or make a giant leap over the chasm of uncertainty to get help. There are no baby steps in this. Only a giant leap that causes many to fall.

I deliberately didn't set my alarm because I didn't want to go to school tomorrow. I've gone into school the past two days and I've hardly had any lie ins, despite being on study leave. So I decided to treat myself today. But I jerked awake and got all panicky because I thought I was late. No going back to sleep for me, apparently.
