The name Gerard definitely strikes me as an older name, though it also sounds respectable and strong. Plus, the bearer of this name could go with the nickname "Gerry."

I agree, although I'm not too sure about the nickname "Gerry".
I like the name partially because it does have very old roots, but yet it's fairly uncommon, which I find to be a pretty cool combination. It's a name that's still unique, without being to risque.
