I have been having weekly playdates with my friend that is very similar to me except that she's a singlet. She is sorta interested in the furry fandom and loves animals all around. The last time we met up, we painted raptor masks, those cheap ones from Target. We are looking at making manes for them out of faux fur but we don't have a mannequin head. Does anyone have any patterning tips other than just take a TON of measurements? Also, does anyone have any tips on what to tell my mom what it is because she thinks furries are all mature content so if you could help me out, that would be great. One last thing, where could I get really thin foam for the inner mouth and forehead? Thank you!

Hi Nick! It’s great that you have a friend that shares your interests, I know I had a lot of fun helping my sister make one of her suits and going to cons together(rip 2020/2021 con season).
For the first fursuit head I made I actually used a cheap foam mannequin head I bought at Joann’s. It’s not perfect, and it’s a little small(roughly 21” iirc) but it got the job done and my head fit me well. You can also buy foam sheets at Joann’s, they have as thin as 1/2” I believe and they have frequent sales and coupons.
As for your mom, I’d suggest maybe showing her the Moms of Furries YouTube channel. It’s moms with furry kids who make videos about misconceptions of furries.

Thank you so much, that is all very helpful information!

Sorry about your situation mate, that really sucks. It would unfortunately be difficult to use those materials to make a suit that would withstand a lot, but I do think you could.

I'd start with using the foam as a base. You don't need a lot, but it will help to work as a stabilizer against your body, as well as helping to make it more comfortable.

Cardboard can luckily be folded a bit, not well, but enough to shape it a bit if you're looking for something 3D, which I'm assuming you are. Try creating a pattern first using paper and see how the folding would work. Once you have a shape, decorate the cardboard however you want. The tape can be used to hold it together once you have it all folded.

The string will be your best option for either belt loops (if you have a belt readily available to you) or a belt itself. For belt loops, make them large enough for your belt, but small enough so the tail doesn't hang loose. Elastic is typically used to make this less of a problem, so you'll have to be careful if your string isn't stretchy like elastic. To make a belt, cut a piece of string long enough to fit around your waist, with enough extra to tie it at your front. attach the middle of the string to the base with plenty of tape, and then just tie it whenever you want to wear it.

I haven't tried any of this before, so it's all just an idea, but I certainly hope it helps you out! Just know we'll always love and support you here, furry or not! <3

Are you a Furry or a Fan: Furry
Do you own a fursuit: No. I can't buy or make one yet, but I'm going to when I'll grow up.
If so have any pictures: I don't have a suit, as I've said.
Fave thing about the Fandom: The whole idea of anthropomorphic animals is pretty interesting, it's not only a thing existing for centuries, as anthros existed even in mythology, but it's also a way to express yourself. Every animal is very different and surely everyone could identify oneself with at least one specie.

I got a question regarding fursuit fur.

I plan on making my own partial fursuit using a pre-made kemono base. But for my fursuit, I don't wanna use the typical fluffy fur you usually see on fursuits because it doesn't match my fursona. I want it to be fuzzy. I tried looking up fuzzy fur on Google but see fabric I'm not referring to. It looks like this:
Image
Image
In terms of feel. If you had that LPS before, you'd know what I'm talking about. It's smooth and fuzzy and the fur doesn't look hairy compared to something like this:

I want it as my main fur for my fursona (head, ears, paws, and tail)
Does anyone know what fabric I'm referring to and where I can get it? Texture is important for me and I can't imagine making it without that type of fabric.

@Parkayl looks like flocking to me! It isn't actually a solid material, it's lots of small fibre particles that are stuck together using an adhesive, I'm not too familiar with the process honestly but it is possible I know a maker called Tamburmane uses it as a technique on their suits, hope that helps a bit! c:

That’s the first thing that popped into my head as well. If flocking doesn’t work out though you can look into fleece faced fursuits, that might be able to give a similar look or atleast be closer than faux fur.

It's not as fuzzy as flocking, but you might try minky?

I’ve done a decent amount of home made tails before. Depending on the animal you may be able to use a pair of leggings. The end of the leg is where it would attach to the belt, depending on how you want it to hang and move will change how you attach it, and at the top of the leggings you can cut out the tail tip shape, rounded pointed etc. turn inside out, sew the tip together and turn right side out, add stuffing, the stretch of the leggings allow you to the shape the tail with stuffing.
If you don’t have leggings you can probably find some at a second hand store, you might even get lucky and find stuffing to! (Stick it in the freezer for a day to kill any micro bugs and germs that my have moved in)

If you want it furry or fluffy I have seen where people have made tails using yarn, I havnt gotten to try this but I believe you should be able to sew sections of yarn to the tail and then go through the fluffing process.

Fluffing process: brush yarn ends with wire pet brush,
That’s it.
If you want it you have a smoother fluff, flat iron the yarn and rebrush. For visuals look up how to make a tail using yarn. You could also use these how tos to make a tail, but idk about you but I like having a cuddly tail along with a fluffy tail

My mom is major against furries, but never had a problem with the tails I’ve made. For example umbreon in the style of a flapper girl and fun time foxy as well fun time foxy. I’ve made quite a few others but I can’t recall what they were, I think one was a skitty tail? I know I’ve done several cat tails

Are you a Furry or a Fan: Furry :)
Do you own a fursuit: Yes! 3 which are still in the works and 1 partial suit i finished like. 5/4 years ago?
If so have any pictures: heres one of the finished suit! Like I said before she's pretty old and doesn't really live up to my current standards but I think she's pretty alright for my first attempt :)
Fave thing about the Fandom: Art, fursuiting, and generally just the feeling of community and being a part of something I really love, if that makes any sense :D
