In some forms of Christianity, though, you aren't allowed to eat seafood, or anything from a pig.

Am an attendant lord, one that will do
To swell a progress, start a scene or two,
Advise the prince; no doubt, an easy tool,
Deferential, glad to be of use,
Politic, cautious, and meticulous;
Full of high sentence, but a bit obtuse;
At times, indeed, almost ridiculous—
Almost, at times, the Fool."

Yes, they believe pig is dirty, and the same goes for seafood. I had a friend who was some type of Catholic/Christian, and she wasn't allowed to eat certain types of meat because that was the way her family and religion interpreted the Bible, that seafood and pig were dirty. I believe there was another food they weren't permitted to eat, but I can't remember.

As I recall, shellfish is said to be an abomination in the bible, as it doesn't have fins or scales, and the pig is considered unclean (which isn't the same as dirty as we understand the word). Both edicts do have a base in sense though, since pigs harboured a lot of nasty parasites that could transfer to humans if the meat wasn't properly cooked, and bivalve shellfish can accumulate toxins from algal blooms, the eating of which can result in a range of problems from diarrhea to memory loss to death in severe cases. I imagine a few incidents of bad shellfish would have been seen as divine punishment, and so it came to be thought that shellfish was "an abomination unto God" to quote the phrase. If you've ever heard the phrase "an 'R' in the month" with regards to shellfish, it's because of shellfish poisoning - algal blooms usually occur in the summer, in months like June, July and August, and are far less likely to happen in other months, such as March or September, so shellfish was generally considered safe if it had been harvested in an 'R' month. With pigs, many ancient cultures considered them unfit to eat and used them for waste disposal rather than food if they had them at all, the same way a lot of them used dogs (which are also an 'unclean' animal in at least some religious texts).

That part made me angry (not at you, Atwood).

At least they aren't getting eaten... I'd feel rather lucky if I were a pig.

Well the way my friend's family saw it, ALL seafood was dirty, and pigs were dirty. Not just unclean, DIRTY. Which I think is ridiculous, but hey, its their beliefs.
