XD arm guards never seem to help me. I made the mistake of wearing a light shortsleeved tunic the last time I did archery... the bowstring went right through the top of the arm guard, literally, and it hit my bare skin because I wasn't wearing long sleeves...
I ended up with a welt that swelled up so much I had to bandage it. :P my friend got it more painful than me, though. Her arm was literally blue when she showed me today.
My mom is considering getting me those types of 'smoother' arm guards... they strap, like, right to the arm with no openings anywhere.

I often get in the bad habit of sorta bending my arm while doing archery... maybe that's the same problem you are getting? :P
Try straightening out our arm straight out so that your elbow faces directly to the side, and doesn't point downwards or anything. That way, there is a smaller chance of the bowstring hitting you. It may feel weird doing it at first, but it's just a muscle you may need to practice. :P

You guys are so lucky that you have an archery place nearby where you can practice! I have a nice target range set up in my backyard, but I feel like I'm drawing back the string wrong because it always end up hitting my arm when I release, which really hurts. :/ I want to find somewhere where I can learn and get better, but the nearest place is 45 minutes away.

I know how to fix this. c: try a less tight grip on the bow. That way your elbow will be further from the string and your arm won't get hit. My archery instructor taught me this, hehe. If you don't have an armguard, you should also try and purchase one.

I'm being a huge hypocrite because I never wear mine |D

Ok, I'll try that out next time! I have an arm guard, but it's pretty small. It only fits my wrist, so I'll have to buy a longer one sometime.

One thing you should also do is try to make sure that your posture is right, it can be tricky to get it right but that could help a ton. I was having a lot of trouble when I first started with my arm getting hit too, and my teacher told me to put my shoulder down a bit more and that has solved my problem (I don't wear an arm guard at all now) c:

Face it.
Fight it.
Finish it."

I wish I had some XD I usually shoot instinctive and don't aim much. Just point and shoot. Hopefully I will get a stronger bow soon c:

Just so everyone knows, I have been having some family problems and I am also finishing up school for this year, so if I do not respond to PMs, trades, etc. please be patient. I may have to take a short hiatus randomly, and I may not be able to warn anyone. I hope you can understand, everything is pretty stressful right now </3

Aahh, I can finally join this thread. <3

Yesterday I got a bow and arrow for my birthday.
My uncle is going to teach me how to use it soon. c:

I've always been interested in archery,
and for a long time I've wanted to learn it. <3

That's awesome! I got a new one for my birthday, since I outgrew my old one. It's huge compared to the other one, and it shoots really well. The arrows are a lot longer and sharper too. I could definitely kill someone with this bow, lol! Good thing if anyone ever tries to break into our house. Since I got this one, I haven't been having any trouble with my arm getting hit!

Does anyone have any suggestions for strong on a homemade bow? I use twine that I found in my basement, but it keeps rubbing on itself and breaking.
