I'm trying to make my own bow at the moment too! :D
I'm running into 2 major problems...
1) I don't know what to use for the drawstring part...
2) I can't find straight pieces of wood to use as the arrows...

Any suggestions at least for the string...? Im afraid a rubber band would break... :/

Well, due to some circumstances, I had to give up on making that bow. :( The wood just wouldn't bend right, which made me end up turning it into a cane. LOL
As far as the string goes, you could always try some fishing line. You would probably need the 50 lb. or 100 lb. strength fishing line for a decent bow. Just get enough twisted together to form a rope-like strand so that it doesn't dig into your fingers if you don't have a glove. I've also been having difficulty finding some straight pieces of wood for the arrows, so I might just succumb and buy some from the store once I find a better piece of wood to make the bow out of.

What kind of target would you recommend for practice? I want to find something easy to handle.

Just so everyone knows, I have been having some family problems and I am also finishing up school for this year, so if I do not respond to PMs, trades, etc. please be patient. I may have to take a short hiatus randomly, and I may not be able to warn anyone. I hope you can understand, everything is pretty stressful right now </3

I would recommend... Probably one of those strong styrofoam targets. It's easy to draw the arrow out, but the only problem is that sometimes the arrow can totally penetrate and hit whatever's behind it.

Okay, I will try to find one. There will probably be plants behind it anyways, so that won't be much of a problem. Thanks!

I am looking for a class near me, but I'm so busy I don't have much time. I am about to finally get a bow. I'm so excited!

Really, that's awesome! :D Good job on that! I am also getting a bow soon, I just can't decide on my drawstring weight. :P

Yeah, I'm really excited. I couldn't find anything higher than 20 pounds that costs less than about fifty dollars, but I found a good bow with a 20 pound draw. Eventually I will get a stronger bow, when I have some practice :P

Yeah, I hope I have some skills... I have had a little bit of practice with a very low draw weight, and I think I'm pretty good XD
