The senate is currently hearing argument about DOMA. They are technically able to repeal it based on this and make same sex marriage legal in all fifty states.
It is not merely a religious issue, but a political one. It affects everyone who lives here. I suggest you not bring it up if you disagree, especially for religious reasons, as most people on the internet are vehement about their standpoint and will not be kind in telling you exactly what their views are.
