The theory of evolution is that changes would be made to the original species, and the qualities that do nt help it survive are bred out. So, yes, according to that theory, apes should not still be around.

@blackfeather: idk if you saw my response earlier, but the problem with your statement was that even though monkeys and humans share common ancestors, they branched off as two different mutations
saying monkeys/apes shouldnt exist because humans do is like saying wolves shouldnt exist because coyotes and foxes do

the idea of evolution is that there are common ancestors

we do not evolve 'from monkeys', we never have evolved 'from monkeys', we never will evolve 'from monkeys'; taxonomy aside, that's just not how evolution works

instead way back there was this primate-ish thing once upon a time and some of the descendants of that primate-thing evolved into, say, great apes like bonobo chimpanzees, and some descendants evolved into us

so people saying "but why are there still monkeys when we evolved from them" is wrong on so many levels it makes me weep tears of blood, because we didn't evolve from monkeys, evolution doesn't work that way, and to boot it's like saying "but if I evolved from my cousin then why does my cousin still exist" THE POINT IS THAT YOU DIDN'T, you don't need to go disprove the existence of your grandmother or something

the fact that someone can apparently be taught this in school and through some failure or multiple failures on down the chain of communication still defend this idea makes me want to tear my own face off and sling it into outer space in pure screeching rage
