Mathematics *are evil* SAVE ME!!!!

Postby Kitsune Eika » Mon May 03, 2010 1:15 pm

One thing is giving me issues.

Five less than three times a number is sixteen more than two times the number. What is the number?

I need to work backwards or something, I'm pretty sure of that, but wouldn't I need to know where to start off? There's no base number to work with...and my mother won't answer my cries for help. I feel really dumb, because this looks so simple, but all the numbers and "times a numbers" are confusing me.

Don't give me the answer, I'll feel guilty for the rest of my life. :? Just tell me how to do it.

Hmm... Let's see:

3 x 16 x 2 - 5 = 91

I don't know. Sorry! I wish you luck :3 I would check my math, but I haven't a calculator :?

You have to set it up in an equation.
3x-5 = 2x+16
(Only read the next two paragraphs if you don't get how I set it up in equation form. Otherwise, I think it'll just confuse you, so skip to the third one. :b )

Five less than three times a number would be 3x-5, because x equals the number that is not given. If you had 5 less than 3 times 5, you would do 3 times 5 equals fifteen, minus 5 equals ten. Right? (That was just a random example, not the answer.)

Sixteen more than two times the number would be 2x+16, because x equals the number that is not given. If you had 16 more than 2 times 2, you would do 2 times 2 equals 4, plus 16. Right? (That was just a random example, not the answer.)

So after you get it set up in equation form, you would get x on one side and the other numbers on the other. :b
And then you'd keep doing the equation until you ended up with x=(insert answer here). Do you kinda get what I mean? It's hard to explain math by typing. xDD

Trust me I am in math at school right now. We are learning about wages! I am scared! If only I was in preschool and I could go to sleep.
