I'm quite convinced this will happen. The mayans predicted it, and the oil spilling in the Gulf of Mexico will most likely pollute all of the oceans if they don't close it. Then the world will really end.

the Mayans didn't predict the end of the world. the calendar ends at the end of the previous age of man. even the Mayans have said the 'end of the world' thing was complete rubish.

OMG EARTHQUAKES IT'S 2012! we've ALWAYS had earthquakes like that, we just haven't always had the technology to know it was going on HALFWAY ACROSS THE FRICKEN WORLD. I am going to be the one with the bullhorn proclaiming the stupidity of the world on 12/22/12 XD that will be very fun! besides it is totally the greatest opportunity to pull some AMAZING pranks on people who believe in it! XD

edit: with all the 'Mayans got bored talk' I think I should add something, they didn't die out their culture is still alive and thriving in meso-America today, they didn't get bored either, the calendar ends at the end of this 'age of man' an age ended in the 1900's too. it's meant to repeat itself afterward, the Mayans themselves said the world ending was complete rubbish. but the calendar certainly does predict the apocalypse, apocalypse means 'rebirth' or 'beginning' or something along those lines ^^

In my opinion, it means that "2012" will just be a new beginning, of something new. I do not believe that the world will end at all.

Me and my friend were discussing this in school during Alg 2. XD And some junior turned around and told us we talk about gay topics no one else talks about.
She seriously needs to look around... It's a very talked about topic.

I also know a senior who really believes this will happen. She told my Spanish class why worry about school if we're all gonna die in 2012 anyways. XD I wanted to tell her if she really believed that to rob a bank December 20th 2012.

Well this world will come to an end one day and we cannot stop that from happening. But it will NOT end in 2012. Both the Earth and sun are still REALLY young and that the end of the world will happen when we are millions of years after death.

like Wolfwhisperer said, the Earth and Sun are still young and the end of the Earth will come when the sun becomes a supernova which all really old stars become after exploding and its unlikely to happen in a few billion years. So even when the end comes, we wont be there to see it.

Right, I highly doubt that in our lifetime we'll see any changes that significant. Even if we do go extinct, it'll take some time.
Unless we nuke the ocean. Then maybe the seas will boil and Godzilla will destroy us, having finally teamed up with Nessie and Spongebob. >_>
