Dog Kennel Debate

Postby classi » Mon Jan 16, 2012 1:30 am

I've seen that there are mixed feelings on kennels. So, I just wanted to hear everyones opinions on them.
Dog kennels, as in the ones that most people have in their homes. Below is a picture of a standard dog kennel, although some have plastic or wood on them.

Unfortunately, there has to be rules because since I've participated in numerous debates, most of them have gotten out of hand.

- Be respectful of others opinions.
- Do not insult anyone who has posted ( Yes, yes, even 'minor' insults. Be kind. )
- Please type in a way that people can understand you
- Do. Not. Start. A. Fight.

So, let's begin. I'll post my opinion after a few people post.

What sort of kennel? Boarding kennels or the plastic kind with the cage doors that dogs and such are kept in?

Perhaps I should've been a bit more specific, my bad.
Dog kennels, the ones that you have in your home. They can be plastic with doors, or cage-like, or such.

I have three dogs and they all sleep in plastic kennels (also known as crates) every night. I do not use them as punishment and they are large enough for the dogs to actually stand up, turn around, and move into a comfortable spot. Each dog has their own and they enjoy going into them at night as they make them feel secure (this is especially true with my 7-year-old maltese. She's a runt and has been through a lot of terrible things in her life). The ground is padded with soft blankets so they do not have to lie on the cold, hard plastic. I have, however, seen these crates used for cruelty and punishment. Lacey, my two-year-old bichon/maltese cross, was kept in one of these crates for the entire day, every day, and was forced to use it as a bathroom as she was rarely let out.

I do not see them as cruel as long as they are only used for travelling/sleeping and the dog does not fear or hate the crate.

I also do not believe in crates being used for punishment. I support other uses, such as sleeping or putting your dog in one when you cannot watch over him. My dog actually loves his crate.
Once, when I couldn't find him, I looked in his crate and he was there. That's where he always goes if he's tired, or if he just wants to relax. We have a little pad in there so that he doesn't have to lay on plastic, too. It makes him feel secure. Usually, if we put him in there, when we open the door he doesn't come out for about 5 minutes, and sometimes we have to lure him out with a treat or toy.
I've seen some people disapprove because it's like a cage. Which, I do not understand. What is bad about a cage? Dogs like small spaces, and as long as it's comfy they'll enjoy their kennels. If the kennel is too large, they will not like it. If the kennel is too small, they will not like it. It's hard to get an ill-fitting kennel, however, since there aren't that many sizes of them.

I tryed putting my old dog in a more cage-like kennel before (like the one in the first post), but she didn't like it because she could see everyone and it made her feel lonesome as she wasn't out there with us. It's best if they can't see out of the sides, although some dogs can't sleep in crates unlesss they can see out of them.

We put a blanket over my dog's kennel so that he can't see out of the sides.

That sounds like a good idea. Surprised I didn't think of that. I feel so stupid now. ._.

My dogs, as puppies, were put to bed in these crates {what Cobra poasted}. That way they could walk around a bit (it was big enough... when we got them, both fit comfortably into one) as they pleased. This prevented them from getting into trouble while we were sleeping or at an outing. We took off their collars, put down a kennel-bed (there's pad specifically for them) with a blanket and a safe hard-toy if they wished to bring one in with them. We even found a way to hook the doors to each other so that it created a small tunnel between them when they had nap-time as pups. These kennels also helped with dog potty-training.

We since took it away, as they outgrew them, but we bought them a new pair and have not needed to use them. My male dog like to have covering over his head, so we will ocassionally bring it out for him if he pleases. They girl dog like to be spread out on the floor or on her big cushion that we put on the couch.

As they got older, we bought a soft-kennel, this:

It came with a lame piece of cloth on top of cardboard (as shown), so we put some of my feather pillows and blankets in there. The sides open and close, so we'd open them during the summer and daytime, and we'd close them during winter or when it's time for bed. They went in there as they pleased, and we occasionally put them in there when we would go out. My dogs don't use them anymore, but we travel with the kennels just in case. I do think that me and my family used them in a positive way, as I think my dogs do see them as a positive object.

I think crates can be used at night, or during the day when your at school/work. But I don't think it should be used for punishment because then the dog would think every night when they go in it their being punished. My dog Baci sleeps in a crate because she is being house trained (no she isn't a puppy, she use to be a street dog in Peurto Rico)

But I can't hear a word you say
I'm talking loud not saying much
I'm criticized but all your bullets ricochet
You shoot me down, but I get up

I'm bulletproof, nothing to lose
Fire away, fire away
Ricochet, you take your aim
Fire away, fire away
You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium"

Between school, my pets, homework, art and life I have not been able to get on cs often, so please don't be surprised if I'm not very active.
