True Friendship Can't be Bought... Adopt a Shelter Pet

Postby puppylove94376 » Wed Jan 11, 2012 11:11 am

I can't agree with that slogan anymore!
True Friendship Can't be Bought... Adopt a Shelter Pet

I think that is a beautiful quote that shows man's devotion to his best friends. I believe however, we are not supporting our best friends like we should. Did you know that nearly 4.6 MILLION animals are put down each year. (That's like one every eight seconds! Now how awful does that sound!?" I work for a nonprofit organization called Mostly Mutts! http://mostlymutts.org/ They do good work for saving animals out there, and they're certainly not the only ones. Today, help a friend; man's best friend. Adopt a dog, spay or neuter, or donate or volunteer today. What are your thoughts on the matters of overpopulation and abuse?

I am very supportive of adopting from shelters, but I am also not against reputable breeders.

I see nothing wrong with good, registered breeders working to improve the genetics and creating robust sound stock. ;D Also, adoption is pretty snazzy as well. If I wanted a pet quality dog then a shelter is right up my alley. If I wanted a dog for sports/work, than a reputable breeder it is.

If I want a purebred, I'm going to look into either a breed-specific rescue or a good breeder of high quality work dogs. For instance, I want a GSD, and I'm refusing to get one from your average shelter because untrained GSDs (which most of these are because of their previous owners) are notoriously bad with cats and stubborn to boot. I might get a young dog from a rescue, but I'm most likely to get a puppy from a breeder. There's nothing wrong with that, and there's certainly times when getting a shelter dog is appropriate. I just don't think anyone who wants a specific breed should be made to feel guilty because they went to a reputable breeder instead.

My babies are my best friends and they were bought and bred though my sister. Though, due to her being unstable and all I am no longer a loud to see them ever again :(

Though, my old girl bella is the best dog ever born in EDIT my op. She was bought and is the sweetest, loving, caring, gentle dog I have found thus far. She may not be able to go into nursing homes because I havent went to go get the licence but I know if I did do the test she would pass with flying colors. She is one of those dogs you can take her up to even the sickist of people and know she wont jump, make noise and so on.
The only reason I have made my mind up not to go do the test is because her hips are not as they once were, and she tends to slip when jumping down from sometimes or running on wood floors. Even though she wont be running, their floors are slippery, believe it or not. Even though its not that bad, I wouldnt like to do that to her.

Though, Jarvis, my mutt boy that is counted amoung those I will never see again came from the pound. He is just a runner, and just a happy go lucky pup. He is the opposite in some ways then bella. Bella is calm, cool, collected. Jarvis is spazzy, hyper, all over the place. Though, they do share something in common...love for everything.

I love getting your feedback. I think getting a dog from a breeder as long as the breeder knows what they are doing. If the breeder is over breeding or does not take care of the dogs well. Thanks for replying!!!

I bought my dog, and I would like to think that he truly loves me... It'd be kinda freaky to have a dog following at my heels if it didn't love me.

I got my bird from a breeder since I couldn't find any rescue Starlings in my area.

I think she loves me.

I'm all for rescuing, though. I wish pet shops would shut down, and someone would stop all of the irresponsible breeding.
