My dog hurt his leg badly.

Postby arcticwolf » Sat Jan 07, 2012 2:03 pm

This morning one of our dogs, Jimmy, stood up and began yiping in the living room as I was getting ready to leave. He was limping badly, and nearly fell over. My mom says he did the same thing earlier in the middle of the night while I was sleeping.
I've inspected his paw, all of his nails are intact and his paw pads are fine. We're almost positive it's his leg that is hurt.

My dad says he thinks the cause of this is when Jimmy was coming back in the house from being left out. Apparently, as he was running up the concrete stairs, he tripped and rammed his leg into one of the steps and that there was an obvious "thud".

We were planning to take him to the vet today (today is the day we noticed anything was wrong), but there were no spots open so we have an appointment at opening time tomorrow morning.

About half the time he attempts to walk or move, he'll yipe. We've been lifting him on and off the couch so he doesn't jump, and keeping him off his leg as much as possible.

My purpose of this thread is to ask, what are tips to help lessen pain for him? I was thinking to try a heating pad on his leg but I'm afraid that will make the pain worse.

i think that your dog's leg is broken. i too have a dog with an injured leg. well, she's not really my dog. we watched her get hit by a car and we rescued her. she just got a new cast yesterday. anyways, i jut think his leg is broken.

We do as well, that or he fractured it.

Sorry about the dog, glad you were able to rescue her though. Any idea who's it is?

well, i say the best possible thing to do for him is to keep him from moving as much as possible. if it is fractured or broken, his moving will just agitate it and cause him more pain. also, try ice, then heating. numbing the pain first is a much better approach then straight heating, and tends to soothe much more effectively.

If he gets sore again, I'll try ice. I'll have to do some searching on the web to see what else helps.

Yeah try ice, that defenitely soothes pain and numbs broken or fractured bones, but not completely.
