Make sure he has a few different kind of scratching things as not all cats like the same stuff. Cardboard, sisal rope, carpet or maybe even wood, horizontal and vertical and make sure anything upright is tall enough for him to stretch all the way out and sturdy enough to not fall over or wobble.
Have any scratching posts near the things he likes to scratch and gradually move them to a better location once he's using them. If your cat reacts to catnip then you could try spraing some on. Cover anything he likes to scratch but isn't allowed to with something unpleasant like foil, sticky tape or something. Give him something he really likes (treats, cuddles, toys etc) when he uses the scratching post like a good kitty c:
