As with anything, there are both good and bad sides. I cannot speak for dog racing, as I do not know enough about it to give an educated opinion as opposed to an off-the-cuff response. However, I know for a fact that many horse owners are very kind to their race horses. My own horse is an off the track thoroughbred. He did very well in maiden and then claimers, but when they tried to bump him up to allowance races, he started coming up body sore. He just was not cut out for that high level of work. Rather than keep running him in claimers (which is where anyone can put down the "claim" price before the race and buy the horses) where he might be claimed by someone who would race him to death, they gave him up to a rescue. He might not be cut out for higher level races, but he is just perfect for what we want him for! Clearly, if his previous owners were just in it for the money, they would have kept racing him until someone else claimed him. They lost money on him, all to ensure he got a good home.
My husband's family has a jockey in it. She's a ridiculously willful person, but she never mistreats her mounts. She is willing to abuse herself for the win (she won a race after having her nose broken by the horse when it reared coming out of the starting gate!), but if the horse comes up lame, she will not push it. There will always be bad people in every walk of life, and they are going to get the most attention. However, there are also good people in most walks of life. In many cases, such as with horse racing, there are a lot of good people. Even if you look at it from a monetary stance, it makes no sense to destroy the animal that is supposed to be bringing you money. If it is injured, it cannot run well. No one wants a horse to break down on the track. Does it happen? Absolutely, but accidents happen even in regular rides on companion horses. At the barn my husband used to ride at, a horse just fell over dead on the middle of a trail ride. It was something no one could have done anything about, and it was heart-breaking and horrible, nonetheless. Yet no one blames Conan's (the horse) rider for his death.
