Every halloween when I trick-or-treat down there and kids are setting off fireworks, the poor old guy is shivering because she said it probably reminds him of the gunshots.. :(

My dogs shiver in fireworks..and their english & german pointers :/
What shes saying is probably just because she doesn't like the sport or something

Generally speaking, I'd assume greyhound dogs are more tolerant of loud noises and gunshots than most other dogs. After all, they can't have a dog that freak out as soon as the starting pistol goes off. I think that usually people that have dogs that will be around gunshots on regular basis (racing dogs, hunting dogs) does their best to train the dog to get used to sounds like that.

Fear of fireworks and thunder and other loud noises is very common for dogs. :3

Yes, but have your particular dogs been trained to get used to gunshots? Dogs might be born with more or less sensetivity to sudden loud noises, but in general, no matter the breed, you need to train them to get used to it. When I said that greyhound dogs were likely more tolerant, I meant ex-racing and racing greyhounds, sorry if I was confusing. XD

I think greyhound racing is creul because when they are not racing they are cooped up in small cadges but I don't think horse racing is creul. Horses can get hurt in anything from racing, eventing, even riding on a trail,or just standing in thier stall (my horse got hurt when he was just in his stall, but he is recovering well). All Im saying is that horses don't just get hurt in racing. My friend has a thouroghbred who was retired and she is training him in hunter/jumper. She only had him or a few weeks and he is jumping like he has been doing it his whole life. Though I think that they should be raced at an older age and wen their bones are more developed

With the Barbaro incident he did not have to get put down because he broke his leg in racing, that was recovering greatly, but it was because he got really bad lamanitis and from that he foundered really badly so they had no choice but to put him out of his miserey.

For those who don't know lamanitis is a condition when the blood rushed to a horses lower leg causing it to founder. Foundering is when the coffen bone (or the bone inside the horses hoof) rotates. My horse got laminitis too but is was found so quickly that is was treated before it could get seirious. I was so sad because I was at the world equestrian games when it happened but luckly I was going home that day. But my horse is recovering well anyways :)

Whoa, honestly, I don't know her opinion on the sport, or anything like that. Spencer was retired early because he'd panic at the sound of the gunshot. (My father gave me more info on Spencer, he and her are old friends)

It's cruel. How would you like to be a greyhound, running every day, and when they 'retire' they get put to sleep. It is just terrible. Horses are treated better in horse racing than greyhounds.

I personally disagree with both. The animals are normally always just thrown out. It is very sad.

I find greyhound racing cruel but not horse as they are very well treated.

It's cruel, Greyhounds should never be raced. People are doing it for money, I mean c'mon, let them live life and be loved.
And the horses, yes they are well treated in all but have you realized that every year at almost every racing place atleast 1 horse gets killed? They should be more careful with the races at least, and maybe make a way so the racers can't run into each other.
