Oh hello, not-so-new thread!

:D Any tips on getting jumping confidence back? A few years ago, I had a few nasty falls in a row - not all involving jumping - and now I'm really scared of jumping. I really want to again, because Smokey loves jumping, but every time I go near a jump, even just walking past it, I stiffen up and have to turn him away. Even trotting over poles makes me nervous, and I don't even like walking him between two wings, just in case he thinks it's a jump.
Ideas on how to get me out of this cycle? x3

Rode western today<3 I'm so much more confident riding western than english. After my lesson I rode bareback for a bit. I was actually able to get Ripley to trot xD/rambling

Anyone tips on getting a horse to pick up speed besides using a crop? I don't have spurs, either. Ripley's lazy, so I often need a crop to help keep her moving. I don't want to rely on it too much though...

Keep a constint leg on her, Then relise. But of she goes to fast, give her a half holt. Oh! And keep a bit of presure of the bit, with a leg on her.

I want to say, just go with it, but that normally doesn't work. ^^

The simplest way is just to start off slow with poles and tiny jumps. Only move onto the bigger ones when you're confident with the height.

Send me a PM if you want a more complex answer (:

Don't keep a consistent leg on her. x3
Give and release. Don't kick, kick, kick, kick. Instead, try kick, kick, give. Kick, kick, give. Or sometimes when I'm posting with a lazy horse, I'll give a squeeze every time I sit.
Use your calve muscles to squeeze, not your heels, and don't grip with your knees. At least that is what we do in hunters xD

Noo.. Don't keep a constant leg on her, she'll eventually become unresponsive to that. You don't even what to start with the legs, you want to start with your bum muscles- unless the horse isn't trained to respond to that.

Seat > Legs > Voice > Crop

If she responds to your leg, reward her and release the pressure. You don't have to keep pressure on the bit with leg on her either, that'll only make her tuck her head in- and when she does that reward her by releasing the pressure. Keeping a horses head tucked in is great when they are older, older horses loose their back muscles, and that helps build it back up.

As Hanoverian said, give & release. Do not keep constant pressure.

Sigh. I haz a dilemna. I know I've bored this thread with my complaints of wanting a new horse, but it's almost overwhelming.

I love Spirit, I really do and she's like family to me. But I feel I need to move on to a more experienced horse. Spirit is a horse for beginners (even thoguh she does have some moments that I have to hang on for dear life) and I feel since I am getting better at riding, I need a more experienced horse.
But my fmaily can't afford four horses. The rent is 250 a month for full board and I am in school and don't have time to do partial board and feed, water and turn out another horse.

The only way I could get another horse Is if I could somehow pay for at least half of it (that's like a policyfor my mom) and pay the rent every month. Sigh.

Anyone know how to make 250 a month? I'm not old enough for a real job so McDonalds it out of the question.

You could mow lawns, babysit, pet sit, horse sit, muck stalls to get your rent reduced, etc. etc. etc.

And just let me say that you are so lucky xD I want a horse so badly. I've saved over $1000, but that would get me through 2 months of board.

Erille- I feed at the stables once a week after my lesson. That includes feeding hay and grain to the lesson horses and bringing the front horses into their stalls and feeding grain, as well as getting the food ready for the morning. It takes about and hour and pays 10$. I don't know how old you are, but maybe you could do something like that, or see if the stable needs people to work one day on the weekend if that would bring the board price down at least? In September I might actually be picking up another feeding day or two. Also, I know McDonald's actually does hire younger people, I know someone who is 15 that works a few days a week at McDonalds.

And same here, Hano.
