My usually friendly black lab, Ruger, brought something heartbreaking to us: Baby bunny. It's eyes aren't even open!!
My brother picked the thing up and looked it over. Amazingly, there wasn't a single scratch on it.
The internet said that black labs feel paternal to baby rabbits. Ruger found it and, thinking it was abandoned, brought it to us- completely unhurt. Huh? Ruger is a retired hunting dog, who'd brutally murdered all types of animals before- grown rabbits (sorry), birds, stuff like that... So we ran out there screaming because we thought he was trying to kill it for us, which is what we raised him for.
Nope. He was trying to help. (Great, now I feel bad for yelling at him and telling everyone I hated him. I'm not usually like that, but I was shaken up badly.)
We put the bunny in the yard, hoping it's mom returned, and we are waiting now.
Any advice for what to do next time this happens? Not medical advice, of course. c:

Ultimately, the rabbit is a wild animal. If it's eyes aren't open then it IS considered a 'baby' rather than a juvenile (people often find furred, open-eyed little bunnies and bring them in thinking they are helpless little babies). I wouldn't advise trying to bring it in and raise it unless you are committed to a new animal for its lifespan who may never be affectionate (as I'm not sure how hand-raised wild rabbits do in captivity). I don't know whether its mother will want it back or find it and I know that sucks, but that's nature. Stuff happens, and rabbits reproduce several at a time for that exact reason.

Wild bunnies (such as cottontails) are very sensitive to the stress of being picked up by humans and such. That stress can be so overwhelming on their heart that they don't recover, so handling it as little as possible and trying to put it back is the best course of action. I used to volunteer at a wildlife rescue center and one time a lady did find a baby bunny but brought it in without calling first - if she had called, we would've told her not to because the stress of bringing it in could be its doom. Even worse, she dropped the poor thing while bringing it inside.. It lasted a couple days.

Typically wild animals should be left alone and, when it doubt, find the phone number for a wildlife rescue center and ask them what to do!

Found out Bugzy had some type of fungus or bacteria. His cage needed a good scrubbing and he got a small bath. Poor thing.

Hey guys!

I have a mini rex/lop rabbit, he weighs about six pounds and is just a pet, nothing more. He doesn't eat a ton of hay (I give him plenty but he doesn't care for hay much) but to make up for it I give him a ton of fresh veggies every day (kale, parsley, etc). I want to set his pellets up to autoship so I don't have the problem anymore of being nearly out and not able to get to a store (I don't drive so I have to rely on my mom to try and get to a store and buy him the RIGHT food which won't ruin his teeth any further).

Does anyone know about how long a 10 lb bag of food should last him? I'm thinking maybe 2 months? He goes through a 5lb back in about a month but to be honest I've never rly paid attention to how often I buy him food. I don't want to set it for 2 months and then he goes through it quicker than that and I have to improvise for a week or however long.

Could you wait a couple months before setting that up? And maybe write on the bag the date you opened it, or write it all on a calendar to keep track. And if you don't already measure out his pellets, perhaps you could do that too to be consistent? I remember doing some reading on what my rabbit should get for her weight, marked that much on a plastic cup, and have been using that cup for like 5 years. I scoop some pellets to that line, then feed her about half of that when I wake up by 7 and the other half when I go to bed around 10/11. I refill her hay as needed and she gets her veggies when I get home around 3-6 pm (my work schedule varies a bit).

Yeah, I could do that. I usually just measure his food with the same bowl I give him his veggies. He gets maybe a little over half of the bowl a day and then veggies when I get home/before school. I honestly just wanted to try and do it while I was thinking about it, lol. I'll just go pick up a bag tomorrow and write the date like you said for the next 2-3 months. Thanks!

You should be giving him 1/4-1/2 cup pellets per day. I have a rabbitry and I feed everyone about 1/3-1/4 for adults, does on a litter get free fed I go through a 50 lb bag in about a month. If you give a 1/4 cup pellets a day you shouldn't go through very fast, you could always buy a big bag of food that should last you 2-3 months, just watch for weevils.

If you do run out you can always feed oats, plain shredded wheat or Cheerios. I've been in the same situation when I have ran out of my show feed and the feed store is out so I have to buy a cheap feed until they get more purina show in. Also if he is eating more veggies than hay mabye you could add a tiny bit of alfalfa it's like candy to them so he could become more interested, just an idea. Just be sure to not add to much because it is high in calcuim and to much can harm the system so drop veggies high in calcuim such as kale while feeding alfalfa.

Realized that the reason my rabbit was sick was the mites from my chicks. *facepalm* They had climbed into his cage and were bothering him. Yuck! So glad I got that figured out and cleaned up!

Oh dang! Well at least it's figured out!
I'd worm him with a pea sized amout horse wormer (if you have any or know someone who does)
And put some sevins dust on him and in his cage. Just to be sure the mites are or will be gone.
