It seems cruel to kill a rabbit just because it's not pretty enough to show or breed, especially when it's not hard to find it a home as a pet.

it is very cruel. Even if you don't have a good pet outlet there is no reason to cull for markings. And we are talking kits not month old bunnies. I hate that some breeders do that.

They do this for poulty also it makes me sick when I go to rescue poultry how some birds I cant save because breeders put down the ones they ant sell or ones with not good coloring. I try to rescue rabbits when I can ofcourse I find a few homes my bunny is a drop off someone threw him out on the state road to get hit.

Unless the animal was born deformed or sick or on the verge of dying i see no point in euthanizing them that soon.

On the bright side most people still use the meat, so it's not a waste. Perhaps it's still sad even so, but the same happens with cows, pigs, etc everyday. The harlequin kits one breeder who I got my Harley doe from that get culled go to a person as food for their snakes, all poultry I hear about getting culled end up on the table as dinner, it doesn't go to waste. I know people who try and try to find rabbits and chickens homes, but nobody wants them so they eat them instead.

It's sad somebody threw a bunny out on a state road though like wow, that's just mean. xc I here about that with dogs too often.

Speaking of finding bunnies homes, my little Chance just left a few minutes ago. Pretty sad about it, but we need the space and I can't show him, he never made it to weight... he's going to a good home though. He's going to be a pet/breeder. I told them if they ever have babies from him that I need to go see them, they'd be like grandbabies to me. xD Haha! This is the second time I've let go of Chance, the first time the person gave him back because they said he was sad and thought they missed me, which actually seemed to be the case as he perked up when he saw me again... that was last summer. I just hope he'll be happier in this new home, he had more personality then any rabbit I'd ever seen, it hurts to see him go. xc If only I had more money and could just keep them all. </3

Yeah now things like that I strongly dislike. I agree with you there. I know there are people though who think eating them is cruel too though, so I'm never sure. o3o One rescue I follow got a bunch of bunnies ones time and anybody who adopted them couldn't use them for meat or breeding. It took them forever to adopt out all those rabbits as just pets. But there were people who all started commenting on the pictures of them like "People eat them?!?! That's sick!" I SO badly wanted to post on there and be like "But all those cows, pigs and chicken you eat on a daily biases are okay to eat?" Smh.

EXACTLY i hate how the 'cute" factor of rabbits makes them pets, they are actually a livestock animal. And the only reason pretty much there is a overload of rabbits in shealters and pet stores is not because of hobby/show breeders its because of mistake breeders from uneducated owners and backyard bad breeders. It would be so much better if good breeders stocked the stores with purebred rabbits.

On the subject of culling as in killing, with something like rabbits it's a bit tricky as they CAN also be used as pets. In wildlife management, animals are also culled (yes, killed), because there are too many. Subdivisions fragment and decrease deer habitat so that there are too many deer for what little land is left. So some are culled. Is it right? Is it fair? Or perhaps, one could bring up feral hogs, who are not game animals and can be killed without restrictions because they are considered a problem. Is that fair?

I'm not trying to defend killing baby bunnies, or seeing them as so disposable after the doe worked to grow them and give birth. I just have a hard time when people focus on one small part of a whole - since I'm a biologist, I'm more concerned with wildlife management and conservation (though that doesn't mean I have no interest in the treatment of domesticated animals, because I absolutely do). Perhaps part of it is that I'm guessing you guys are teenagers, and I think over time you come to see things as less black and white and more shades of grey. For example, I don't agree with culling the babies but at the same time, I can certainly come up with some reasons why they might feel that's the best route.

Why stock the stores with purebreds?

And perhaps to discourage and avoid unintentional breedings, couldn't breeders have rabbits spayed/neutered before selling or giving away the ones they choose not to show/breed? That seems like an obvious answer to me. Keeps 'bad' lines from going on, prevents uneducated owners from ending up with rabbits because they didn't know information like sexual maturity, sex of their rabbits, gestation period, etc. Sure, in many cases a pet bunny won't meet another pet bunny that might get it pregnant, but if you feel that does play a large role, are breeders doing something to prevent that?

As for livestock vs pets, it's just a term, and terms can change. Some people will always feel one way, others will always feel differently. Many people do not see horses as livestock. As for rabbits, they weren't always used as pets. Pets in general used to be more of a special thing, a sign of status, privilege, or wealth, as they provided no meat or service yet created expenses. I know people who grew up in rural settings who hunted deer, fowl, and rabbits, and the idea of having one as a pet is bizarre, or even people who didn't hunt but had more 'traditional' pets, ie dogs. The times are always changing, and rabbits are more accepted as pets than they have been in the past because they may be more numerous as pets now, as well as technology allowing us to better communicate around the world that we do use them as pets. People are exposed to the ideas and so they do not seem as bizarre to comprehend.
