welcome, welcome! iโ€™ll have you both added shortly, sincerest apologies for the delay!

@Astro - iโ€™ve slept since then, aha, but i ended up skipping saturday and doing a super intensive ride on sunday. and was it a good one - we did tons of spirals with the goal of balancing left to right, and a great deal of shortening and lengthening in the canter to improve front to back balance. we put a couple of ground poles down, ended up getting four strides and eight strides in the same round. let him stretch for awhile, then worked a little leg-yield and shoulder-fore before i hopped off. afterwards, one of the barn kids who is hoping to lease my horse when i leave for school rode him around for awhile, just generally putting him through his paces. all in all, he was very calm, super relaxed, flexible, and willing.
(certainly not expecting you to respond to all this if you donโ€™t want to, aha, iโ€™m partially just documenting for my own sake)
howโ€™s about you - any luck with the barking?

I unfortunately haven't had a chance to see the dogs since the beginning of the month, when I posted last I think.

Hopefully I'll be able to see them soon to get started.

As for you, that's good! Since I don't know much about working with horses, I'm not sure what to say XD

thank god TMEA season is over - hopefully, i'll have some more time to dedicate writing up posts for this topic!

sorry to hear you haven't had time to spend with the dogs, hopefully you get a chance soon!

aha, don't worry about it, i really need to start writing more technical posts on my riding on my blog anyhow. i have a technical jumping lesson tomorrow and am working on scheduling an upper-level jumping lesson on wednesday, and then it's off to southeast Texas for the show this weekend. i'm a little worried since i didn't attend the schooling this weekend due to the vocal competition, but at least it's a course i've run before with moderate success. i had a really awesome dressage lesson last thursday - some of the best shoulder-in i've ever gotten from him - so i'm looking forward to seeing if we can beat our previous best dressage score!

Hope all goes well for you <3, I wish you luck!

I get to see them tomorrow!

Anyone have any tips on training doggos to be quiet before I begin? I've been doing some reading up on that since I've never done it before.

sweet, that's exciting! hope it all goes well!

i've honestly only ever trained dogs to be quiet using +p - the local pet store used to sell a pressurized air can that just sprayed air very loudly. anytime the dog barked, you just sprayed it, and in theory, it would startle them enough that they'd come to associate barking with that sound. but, of course, that's not my preferred way of training, i'm more of a +r kind of person. i've almost considered if something like this would work:
1. put barking on command, i.e. "speak"
2. if the dog barks without a command, -p (i.e. ignoring the dog, taking away toys/food/whatever provoked the barking) until they're quiet)
3. if they continue barking, light +p (i.e. "no", water spray, something along those lines)
these are all just ideas - the can worked for my mom with the sheltie, but i'm always looking for better ways to do things. i'm admittedly not a great source on dog training in general, but these are just preliminary thoughts.

yeah, they used an air at first but it never worked unless the dogs saw it or you were holding it so it wasn't very effective. Then they did water but same thing happened so it also didn't work.

They only bark when someone comes up to the door or if they hear noises they think are from people. Excellent guard dogs I must say but it's not fun when your dogsitting and they almost give you a heart attack because of their barking.

how easy are goats to train?

Quick'lil update; I didn't get to train them yesterday but i discussed plans with my grandma since i need to train her to train them and we'll be training them together.

I think Marty is half-deaf thinking about it now. And no offense to him but hes a bit dumb as well. There have been occassions on which stella has gotten out of situation rather quickly but Marty didn't know what to do and gave up within a seconds. He always imitates Stella too. And I have to yell really loud for him to come to me if Stella doesn't come to me because he'll usually just follow her.

I think I'll start using more hand gestures with him.

Re: training talk || v.2 open

I have a cat and a dog at home. I do target training with my cat so I can get her to follow a target, although there's not really any specific behavior I want her to do at the moment. I just thought it would be fun. And my dog is older and deaf now but fortunately, I trained her with voice and hand signals, but I am brushing up on her hand signals since I never used them too much before, but she still remembers the basics.

I also train animals at work which is where it gets hard. The one I'm really working on now is getting one bird to stop begging for food every time he sees people. Hopefully he'll stop biting as well once he gets it through his head that people =/= food. There's a few other birds who I'm also working with to hopefully become easier to handle. And one who I just want to get to like me.

Also, I haven't started yet, but I'm thinking of trying to train my toad. I think he recognizes the mealworm container because if I touch it, he jumps right in front of the container. It might be fun to maybe build a toad agility course? So maybe jump on a platform, through a tunnel and into a hide or dig into a dirt pit. I think getting him on a platform will be easy enough so I might start there if I actually do it.
