Cat genetics talk

Postby Flocks_of_socks » Fri Apr 27, 2018 10:41 pm

Welcome I just wanna talk about cat colour genetics and hopefully explain it to people who don't know! :D
If you know cat colour genetics please tell me about it because I know but I definitely don't know everything ^^

And if you do cat rp then this thread will help you determine the colour of the kitten!

SOLIDS, TORTIES, DILUTES

Cats have 4 main colours (excluding white)
Red=R
Black=BB
Chocolate=bb
Cinnamon=b1b1

Female=F
Male=M

The reason they are in that order is there dominance over each other. A red cat and a Black cat will often have a red kit because red is more dominant than black. If we put this into the formula and make a kitten

Lets take for an example a Chocolate she (bbF) and a black tom (BBM) their children will be...
BBM
BbM
BbF
BBF

So what about Dilutes?
d=dilution
DD=carries
Dd=None

if a cat has the dilute gene it will be like this...
cream (dilute of red)
Blue (dilute of black and so on)
Lilac
Fawn

So let's go back to the other example and ad dilution...
bbDDf (queen) and BBDdM
so there kits can now be
bbDDM
bbDdM
bbdM
bbDDM
bbDdM
bbdM

BBbbDDF
BBDdF
BBdF
BbDDF
BbDdF
BbdF

A little more confusing but if you break it down. So for example let's take the very first one of each
chocolate tom with no dilution visible but carries and
Black and chocolate she with no visible dilution but carries

How did i get these (also expaning torties)
Male kittens Always Obtain both colour genes from the dam (Mother) A male offspring in a litter will always be the colour of the dam or a dilute of her colours

Female kittens take one colour gene from each parent. A female offspring in a litter will Always be a combo of the dams and Sires (fathers) colour or a dilute of each

This also explains why nearly every single tortie are female.

White
There are three ways a white cat can be born, through dominant white, white masking or albinism.
White dominant cats are completely white and when they have blue eyes they are often deaf, Dominant white cats must have a dominant white parent

White masking is where you can see colour (sometimes)
From grade 1-nearly no white present
to 10-completely white but Its only masking the true colour

It's like putting paint over paint, so a blue parent and a black parent with the white masking gene grade one can have a grade to kit.
