should I teach Lucy not to sniff and pee 8 times on our walks? my mom is down here from Canada to help with my health, and she says something about it that we shouldn't let her mark and sniff so much, coming from her area of working with race horses and how you need to be "like a jailrer" with animals and not let them get their way all the time. teach her to not mark and sniff and mark so mucg even if I'm never going to try to take her shopping. I guess like one trains service dogs. which also has me asking other question, I see some people don't like the idea they exist, because a dog dosen't get the freedom to be a dog, and you need to breed occular asistance dogs, not just go get a mutt of any age from a shelter, my mom seems to agree on their "but why don't these people adopt an adult dog!?" so now I wonder if anyone would or could do such experiment. with the most skilled trainer and right dog

also. if I have no condicance, and have stress or anxiety or am upset. Lucy will "feel it in the leash" as well as misbehave or be overly emotional because my posture from my scoloisis makes my gait weird. is that true? part of why it's hard to train her, and maybe I've been to wishy washy or angry? now that she has to walk her or will help walk her after years of hearing about her and "grahh she's still alive? why did (my stepdad) get that stupid dog?"

I'm not too sure on the whole "sniffing and marking" thing. I personally find it annoying and do not like it when dogs do it. However, I also train my dogs a release command where I give them permission to sniff on walks.

As for the service dog thing, I have one and she 100% gets to be a dog. She is currently running around the backyard wrestling with my dad's dog, getting all muddy. I actually got Skai as a really young pup from a backyard bred litter so that's the mutt part. A good friend of mine also picked up a puppy at a shelter and she is a service dog now. So it's possible. You just don't see very many adult dogs getting adopted into service dog work because it can take 2+ years to train a service dog.

you could try teaching her the "break"/"release" command, if you haven't? i have my dog at a heel when i'm in a situation where i want to walk without interruption and break when he can run around and sniff and just be a dog.
i personally don't think being a "jailer" is the best perspective with training animals of any species. i also can't say i've seen people deprive their service dogs of "being dogs", service dogs i've met are very well cared for.

what methods do you use to train? if you're struggling with confidence i suggest finding an activity you both enjoy doing! if she likes sniffing i'd suggest scentwork. i'm sure other people here might have good suggestions aswell.

Throwing my two pence in, you should teach whatever you want to teach her. If her stopping to sniff and mark so many times on your walks is a detriment to your health then of course; if you're trying to get somewhere specific and don't want slowing down, that too, so it would probably help to teach a focus or 'walk-on' command.
However, in my opinion, dogs should be able to sniff and mark. It's part of being a dog and provides them with mental stimulation. If I'm out on just a regular walk with my dog, her mental stimulation is just as important as her physical stimulation, so I let her stop as many times as she wants even if it annoys me. Again, what everyone needs out of their dog is different, I just happen to not need anything but her presence so her stopping time and time again isn't a issue to me since it's for her benefit.

hi guys!!
first time posting, i'd like to introduce my girl Izzy;

for anyone curious she's a mix! not a 100% sure about the entire genetic but her mother was a yorkshire mix and her dad a lhasa apso/pinscher mix
her appearence is pretty funny actually, her face resembles a lot a yorkshire but she has long thin legs like a pinscher
her ears also never got up, and even though she's taller than most yorkies because of her legs she only weights 4.41 pounds (not sure if i converted it correctly since we use kg in here, sorry!!) so she's quite small still ksksks

izzy is a social butterfly! she loves everyone and will demand pets kskksk
she's also very smart and learns tricks so easily! she knows the basics (sit, lay down, spin, paw, stay) and a few i teached her to help with our routine. those are very basic comands but i'm still very pround that i could teach her everything! i never trained a dog before, but we work hard together. we're currently working on the high five one!

she's very non photogenic and it's hilarious, she's been like this since she was a puppy
i gathered a few of the best ones i have, i hope everyone can giggle a bit with it! kskskkks
the last one is a rare case where she actually came out normal on the photo so i'm putting it here for you guys to meet her!

Lucy is not my dog, she's my stepdad's dog, when he can't walk her during the after noon I do. and he never got around to it. he says for me not to worry. I don't think my mindset is good for training a dog where I over react and get upset to easily. so, she has very litle training.
and I don't think he's going to play scent work with her. . I'm not sure if anywhere close to me has it. or how to have him teach her not to be carsick.

she's just really into "pee mail" so a "look some people on the internet said maybe you should do scent work with her. since I have to stop what feels like every 30 feet while walking her, and how sometimes she's dragging me everywhere trailing on the ground, and trying to go into people's yards to have a sniff"
I look on a page with a serch. I don't reconise all these other area codes. one I do says an animal rescue that is 48 miles away does it.
this other club, well I find it's a club and only take certain dogs because what I'm looking at is a sheet for the competition.

I don't think he is really going to be into it. nor I am going to say "give me Lucy for 4 hours so I can teach her to do this" and "let's go 20 miles from home to this place so she can do it". he's not going to read books or watch videos to play nose games, when he never took her to "puppy classes"


as she is still skittish.
when it's warmer she goes to a local dog park.
