Dog Owner Chat V. 5

Our dog is confusing. He loves small dogs, and wants to spend every minute of his life with them, and he despises dogs bigger than him. (But that's not the confusing part. This is.) So, a little while, my mom found a dog training place. She contacted them, describing Pepper's problems. I read it too. Her description matched Pepper's behavior. The said, "Oh we could fix him in five sessions. In all those five sessions, the crabby woman basically said, "Never have him even see other dogs." The only thing she did with Pepper was feed him when he snarled at dogs. She said it was positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement is when you praise the dog when they actually do something you like, e.g. ignoring the dog, lady. So that was all she did in five sessions. Tell us to never have Pepper interact with a dog and feed him when he did something bad. I know that there's also where you have something good happen to your dog when something they don't like happens, but she should have learned from her mistakes. You've been doing this for about two hours now. It's not working, not even a tiny bit. He is still lunging and snarling. This is not working So he hasn't seen a dog besides his girlfriend chiuhahua. (Don't worry, they're fixed.) But one day my aunt asked me if I wanted to go to the dog walk with her dogs and Pepper. I said "Okay, but I'll have to focus on Pepper. So we went. We got to this area where there were only small terriers. My aunt's dogs are border collies. I let Pepper off leash. It was the happiest I had ever seen Pep. So then, after about 15-20 minutes, this huge dog comes running. I get scared, because Pepper's off leash and really far away. The big dog comes running over to Pepper and the terriers and my aunt's collies. The collies growl and snap, but Pepper doesn't. He comes running to me and whimperwhines like, "I was good! Where's my prize?!" I gave him some cheese. But then we came to another big dog. I was confident that he wouldn't be bad. The collies, this time, were obidient. Pepper was not. This kept happening. So I'm confused. Is he gloating? Do dogs gloat, though?

^^ Hmm, me neither.

Deacon is getting older now n' he's showing it more and more, while he isn't a "senior" dog yet, but he is nearing that life stage so I'm slowing things down a bit. we have a last little preformance to end his career with a bang and then we'll start settling down at his pace and I'll let him go ahead and tell me when he's ready to slow himself down to a stop. I'm hoping to get a border terrier sometime in the future so i'm exited to get very serious with a dog sport here pretty soon!

Wicks not feeling great so we booked a vet appointment. They said he should be ok until tomorrow but I hate seeing him feeling off. :<

He threw up yesterday morning (clear) which I thought was just because he hadn’t eaten yet... he did it again this morning and he’s not acting as playful as he normally is. I tried giving him ice because it’s his favorite treat ever but he turned it down. He mostly lying down but he occasionally wonders over for some scratches. The last time he acted down it was just a UTI so hopefully it’s just something minor like that again.

I trust the vet when they said he can wait until tomorrow but I can’t help but be worried. Any tips on things to make him more comfortable while we wait for his appointment? They already mentioned trying to feed him boiled chicken and rice.


Edit: He are all his breakfast (chicken and rice). He seems to have perked up a bit but is still acting a bit off. He’s usually super playful but again he’s mostly lying down. He has enough energy to be excited for his meal and bark at the cat for being a grouchy brat though.

Is it possible his stomach is just upset? I think he got some kind of crumb off the floor someone dropped the other day. I didn’t think he swallowed any but maybe he did. Either way I’m watching him today and will talk to his vet again in the morning even if he seems to have made a full recovery by the end of the day.

Re-edit: Yeah he’s back to 100% after dinner. He’s starting to ask us to play with him. I’ll still ask his vet if they want us to come in if he’s still acting perky in the morning.

Geez what a day. I feel a bit emotionally drained. =_=

^Sorry to hear Wick wasn't feeling well. I'm so glad to hear he's doing better now. I know I have to really watch Chloe because of her tendency to hoover for crumbs too. I just keep her in my room unless I've swept the floors. It's amazing how quickly they can gobble up a crumb so fast you don't even get a chance to see what it is.

On another note I just read an article on a noise cancelling dog bed Ford (yes, the car company) invented. Yeah he’s a little punk, scaring me like that. He threw up bile again before I woke up but the vet tech said that I shouldn’t have to come in as long as he’s acting normal otherwise, to just continue monitoring him and feeding him chicken and rice for a few more days. She said he probably just ate something that upset his stomach (the crumb I mentioned probably :p)

But yeah he’s still peppy. He inhaled his breakfast, was eyeing a squirrel this morning, and asking to play.

Yeah so, I’m away at college again. And I miss my dog. Don’t get me wrong. I miss my family members too. But I really miss my dog, Jake. He sleeps in my room at night (totally not in my bed at all, would hate to build that bad habit just to pass it to the next person who’s room he sleeps in. Pshh). And here I’m in a single room due to immune system problems. We’re not allowed pets on campus unless we have documentation on why we need them (totally have thought about getting a cat. I love all animals but my room is so small I could never do that to one). There’s plenty of dogs on campus that get walked by people in the surrounding area. But i have yet to see a big ole fluffy golden retriever around here. Worst moment of leaving home was seeing his lil nose smooshed up against the window watching us leave (99% positive he knows when I leave for college because he knows what suitcases and boxes mean). But yeah. My mom sent me pictures today of him. She’d been looking for him all day. Turns out he let himself into my closed room and nosed his way under all the pillows and settled in for a five hour nap. Totally didn’t tear up when she sent me pictures of him all cuddled up there. It’s just allergies. But yeah. I really miss that floofy goofball.

short question: any recommended dog wet food, and appropriate portion size for a chihuahua
x jack russell & a full breed chihuahua?

pip recently had some muscle stiffness, but we went to the vet and got an anti-inflammatory.
during this time, he'd gone off wet food and we slowly had transitioned him onto a store brand
wet food. the moment he was fully transitioned and had been medicated, the store-brand food
stopped selling. in the mean time, he's on some low quality wet food because any food is better
at this point, since he won't eat any dry kibble.

on top of his wet food, he also gets half a 'bonio' & about 10 mixed in kibble. i am worried that i am underfeeding him,
but his protein levels from the low quality food isn't cutting it. my other dog, atlas, is getting
the same, only he is a full breed chihuahua and weighs like 2kg, whereas pip is more of the 4kg
to 5kg since he is a jack russel x chihuahua.

pip is also epileptic. he is on half a 30mg epiphen tablet every 12 hours, which makes him easily
overweight. i do not want to underfeed him, but at the same time, i don't want to overfeed him.

i am looking at moving him to a new wet food asap, but would like some affordable
recommendations? im in the uk, so certain food brands can't be bought without a $30 shipping fee
on top of the food.

We had our first conformation show today! Holy smokes my two made me incredibly proud! Octavia was a bit unsure for show one, but really turned it around and showed much better in show two. She got reserve to her sister in one, and third to both her sisters in two. Our goal is to beat her black bi sister tomorrow!

Bones absolutely killed it. He walked into that ring like he’d been showing for years and knew he owned it. No puppy antics really besides some wiggling when I stacked him but not bad at all. He was the only Malinois entered so won best of breed Mal puppy which sent him on to herding puppy group. Where he placed 2nd out of I think 9-10 other herding pups. I think if he had been slightly older he would have given the much more mature Aussie pup a run for his money!
