it is a real breed that is also in the foundation service stock breed category with akc, along with kelpies and some others. they have a club etc

embark is a dna test most recommend.

I hear embark is the most accurate, also involes more information than like wisdom panel, and warns you of genetic disease ?? ( is disease the right word?) your dog may carry based on their breeds.

ex. gsd's are prone to Hip Dysplasia.
and Cataracts are very common in huskies.

Oh cool! they just look like crazy super mutts to me, aha. They're pretty stinkin cute dogs though!
would need to look into it more, because I'm looking purely based on looks, but kelpies are super cute? i love their build, and i hear they've done pretty good in sports.

Honestly, can't make up my mind if i want a
Belgian Tervuren
Border Collie
Aussie
Border Terrier
Australian Cattle dog
Brittany

Love the larger dog options, But I LOVEE with all my HEARTttTT Border terriers, and I would literally do anything for one, aha
feel like i would break my back training a small dog though, lmao. And of course, I need a grey for occasional lure coursing, but mostly cause I love them and i need a snuggle buddy

We think Cassie is developing cataracts. Stella our GSD is the biggest female/any gender of Shepherd that we’ve seen. She wears an extra large harness and weighs over 100 pounds!

my border collie is perfect for me, but if you want a slightly less intense dog you could go for an aussie. brittany's are devil dogs

Yeah, i don't think they're tooo popular and not to many breeders that i know of.

on regards to your pick, brittanys are medium sized and super active from what my mother told me, she had two when i was in pampers. they were fence climbers though and also fully whistle trained.

i myself will be getting a border collie at some point in the future once things are settled so that is my obvious pick, just got to do a lot of searching for breedings doing what you want to do with your dog.

mostly i could see your factors in choosing between those are size, shedding, availability.

training small dogs can be a bit tricky but you don't do a ton of bending in all honestly, the hardest one would probably be heel with me since i have a standard dachshund. everything else i taught him from a sitting position as a puppy with hand signals, saved a lot of bending in the long run cause he listens to both word and hand signals without me having to bend and lure

Hey all! So since we lost Layla and have now been a small dog family, there's a big pup-sized hole in our hearts and we're looking into getting another larger sized dog around mid-June. We definitely won't be going to a breeder and are looking at rescues, but maybe filling this out will help me decide on what to keep an eye out for?

Have you had dogs before? What breeds? Aussies, labs, and a springer spaniel. If I had the option to, I'd adopt another springer on the spot, but there really aren't any around here. Aside from that, Australian Shepherds have been a pleasure to own. We currently own a Bichon Frise and Spaniel/Pomeranian mix, but of course, I'm in the market for a dog that's a bit larger.
Are there any breeds that have already caught your eye? If so, why? I really love Australian Shepherds as they're what I'm most used to handling, but I'd also really love any sort of shepherd or GSD mix, they're really lovely dogs. Our only certain rule is no Border Collies or Australian Cattle Dogs, my mother was raised with them and though she won't mention why, doesn't really want to be around them anymore.
How much time a day do you have to devote to training your dog? We're waiting for summer to have the first 3 months with the dog being home pretty much all day, but after classes start up again, I'm usually still home for over 6 hours a day and can spend a majority if not all of that time with the dog and doing training.
What kind of grooming needs are you prepared to handle? I'm ready for anything, as I really enjoyed the bonding involved in brushing some of my previous, furrier, dogs every day. However, I still live at home and my mother is not fond of dog hair. She'd be fine with a medium length coat, but definitely not a big puff ball like a malamute or a husky. We're not trying to be buried alive here haha.
What kind of energy level are you looking for? Medium-high. I'd like a dog that can be chill enough to not be destructive during the day when only my mother is home. She's really too old to run with a dog/walk them, but not too old that we're concerned about her being knocked over and whatnot. She can still distract and interact with a dog during the day. When I'm home, I'd love to be able to run with a dog for longer distances, as well as I love hiking on weekends. We also go up to the mountains a few times a year and though Honey loves to explore, that type of area really better supports a larger dog.
What do you plan on doing with your dog? I plan on it being a family companion, however since Honey and I have been doing backyard agility, maybe a dog that can join in would be nice? We also loved going to dog beach before only having the little kiddos who are scared of the waves. A dog that doesn't mind water too much would be nice, though that's not totally necessary.
What size dog are you wanting? Not huge, but on the larger size of medium.
What age dog are you looking for? Definitely not a small puppy, but also we'd like plenty of time with them. I'd say 1-3?
What kind of lifestyle do you live? Definitely active, I used to go run with Layla before classes and we love to hike on the weekends. Honey loves hiking so I definitely think it would be a good chance for the two to interact.
“It’s important that my dog is" loyal to the family and is willing to go go go when I want to go go go.
What do you want the dog for? Family dog for now, but just a personal companion later on. There are no little kids at the house, so that's not an issue. We also have cats, but the cats put rules in place and other than that don't really go near the dogs.
Do you have other animals? If so, what do you have? We have two smaller dogs and two cats. Gidget and the cats usually stay on their own and don't really care about other animals, but Honey loves them. She's been around only big dogs and can most definitely hold her own. She's cute and tiny but very "scrappy" per se and loves to play in a more rough and tumble style. This isn't really my dog, but we watch our neighbor's dog multiple times per week and she goes on most of our walks. She's a Wolfhound/Lab mix and very high energy. We have a field nearby where she and Honey love to run around and play for quite a bit. A dog that would enjoy participating in that would be nice.

I need a dog with a off switch. A dog that will go go go for training, and overall working. But a dog okay to be in the house to chill out when needed. A mal doesn't offer that until they age, While i freaking love them so much! so they're out the door.

Love the look of a border, but depending on the dog, i hear they sometimes have a hard time settling down, even after hours of work, so its a maybe.

I like aussies, but not a whole lot. they're a bit too,, stalky? and i prefer short coated dogs, If i where to get a border, it would be a short coated one.

brittanys are my heart dog, I've always always wanted one, but again with the long hair, I can brush em thats not a problem, the hair. just bothers me, but since they don't have a double coat, im not opposed to shaving the dog. though, it might look funny!

Belgian Tervuren, they're just pretty. I know nothing about them. they're just. really. really. pretty. But I'm probably never going to have one, I'll admire from afar.

Border terriers!!! The best little dudes, I love the wire hair, and their little beards, Omg i can't. they're also working dogs, and small enough to carry around, and snuggle. Love that!

Yeah... Border Collies don't have an off switch lol. They're great, intense dogs but don't expect them to ever be settled. They're bred to work sheep and be "on" all the time as they regularly stay with their herd. I've enjoyed them but they don't ever turn off 😄
My birthday is December 8th ☺️
