I'm a active person, interested in continuing dog sports. I love beagles! but they're really stubborn and lazy from what I hear, and as much as I would love to work with a beagle, at its own pace, I would enjoy a dog with more drive for work than a beagle. I also do prefer larger dogs!

I do have a soft spot for hounds though, maybe I'll have a non-sport beagle, or some other sort of hound one day.

@queenpebbles

mals are very very high drive, high work ethic. so are gsd's, so my main question is, is she high energy? does she have a high desire to work?

doesn't look like a mal to me though, I would say maybe shiba x gsd?
but shibas aren't that common??

If you want really active dog that LOVES to run and play, I’d suggest a Belgian Malinois. Sometimes they can be a bit to much lol. When my dog Cassie was younger, she was about to catch birds mid flight about 5-10 feet in the air! Malinois are also great guard dogs too!

If you want a semi calmer dog that is also still a large dog, I’d suggest a German Shepherd. My German Shepherd, Stella, is such a handle full but she listens pretty well! Both Malinois and Shepherds absolutely LOVE to work lol. Stella (my Shepherd) gets so mad when she can’t go outside on a walk so then she annoys me until I put her harness on and work on leash training lol

Beagles are working dogs. Most people just have their dogs as pets nowadays so what you've seen and heard comes a lot from people trying to teach their dog to do a trick for their kids or something. It sounds like you need to decide what kind of dog sport you want to take part in and pick a breed based on that.

I have a basset hound that runs 20 miles with me at a stretch and is off leash trained as well. He will ignore other dogs touching him and continue on with me completely focused on his work. But when most people think of the breed they picture the fat lazy ones which happens to any dog if you allow it to lie around your house and don't give it a job. Can you blame them? Haha. Free food and a soft couch sounds good to most animals. What sort of activities are you wanting to do with your dog?
My birthday is December 8th ☺️

reminds me of a carolina dog, i can’t really see either of those as her breed based on facial structure alone but that’s just my opinion

@keighan; lazy? heck no. before we rehomed Piper she is extremely fit and active and very scent and food driven. her only stubbornness was regarding house training. she came from two hunting parents though. now that’s she’s going on 7, back with us, and such, she is generally lazy due to her having a bad hip. i had her completely conditioned four years ago and trained a lot of tricks, which she remembers none of now. i suppose it would depend on the parents of the dogs you’re looking into if you do get a non-sport beagle but it would be awesome to get into sports with one.

My mal (Cassie) used to love to work but now that she’s older, she’s become lazy and won’t play with toys lol. I don’t remember how she acted when we first rescued her because I was SUPER young and I was absolutely terrified of dogs but that all changed when we got Stella!

She does look a lot like a Carolina dog! I can send you more photos if you want! Some of them won’t be good since she runs away from me anytime she sees me with my phone in my hand trying to take a photo of her

@queenpebbles
I have looked into mals, they're too much for me to handle lol. thinking a Mudi, Border collie, Or a Aussie shep right now, I know, how basic.

@beagle owners,

I am aware that beagles are working animals, And I know with the right owner they excell in anything they're put into.
I'm looking into doing agility, and free style disk. And I really don't see a beagle doing disk, lmao. And i really don't like handling small dogs in agility, but thats just my personal opinion! I love the beagle though! Maybe I'll get one to do do heelwork to music with! they would be perfect for those tricks that only small dogs seem to be able to do, aha.

Also, if you are looking for a laugh, search up "heelwork to music, Crufts" the handlers outifts are some times just too funny!

-- Are Carolina Dogs real breeds? or just what people are calling super mutts? lmao,,

😂 I Question a lot on what specific breed she is because I can find one photo that looks like her but the rest of the photos look nothing like her lol

What do you recommend for a DNA test? :)
