HI guys! I really want a dog when I move out in like four years (as I am going to start high school soon, so yeah four years i think) lol and I have no idea which breed I should get...

Have you had dogs before? What breeds? I haven't had a dog before.
Are there any breeds that have already caught your eye? If so, why? Um I have had a dorkie in mind or a dalmation. A dorkie is a dachsound and yorkie mix.
How much time a day do you have to devote to training your dog? Well when I move out I will have school most likely but I will be able to in the afternoons and after school.
What kind of grooming needs are you prepared to handle? Not a lot of shedding, my mom takes care of dogs for a living and there is always dog hair everywhere so i really don't want that.
What kind of energy level are you looking for? Something that I can keep up with, like I would be able to play with it for a while but I can't deal with excessive barking and I want to be able to cuddle with it lol.
What do you plan on doing with your dog? [color=#BF80FF]Play with it, go for nice walks, cuddle, and for it to be my best friend. lol that was cheesy.[/color]
What size dog are you wanting? Small to a medium sized dog
What age dog are you looking for? A puppy so I can properly get to know it as time goes on.
What kind of livestyle do you live? (Active, couch potato etc) I am pretty active but I can also be a couch potato at times. I am also very friendly so I would have a lot of friends over and I would live with my best friend which we agreed to.

What do you want the dog for? (Family dog, companion, ect) To be my companion/friend.
Do you have other animals? If so, what do you have? I had a fish but currently I have no animals.

I know this is like a far off thing but I want to be prepared and I want to save up for the perfect pup.

i take it you’ll be in college after HS? i would not recommend a dachshund if you do not want barkings and small dogs take longer to housetrain if you aren’t on a consistent schedule. i do not suggest getting a dog if it’ll be your first year of college, as animals are expensive and so is college. dachshunds are hounds, they are stubborn and need training from the start along with socializing.

for one, where will you be living for college? dogs are expensive. you’ll need a job. also with dachshunds there is always IVDD to think about as they age. dogs as early as two years have had IVDD and that right there can cost up to 5,000 just for surgery and therapy. even a mix can be prone to this. i’m not sure much about yorkers but is there a specific reason you are wanting a specific mix?

with you having never owned a dog before, i suggest waiting until you after comfortable with college and have a steady paying job. then you can budget and see if you can afford having a pet, going to school and working.

you can always volunteer at shelters etc to get to know dogs and training techniques to prepare you along with how much time and work a dog can be, especially if you’re trying to juggle school, a job, and now a dog. .

How much time a day do you have to devote to training your dog? 6+ hours easily

What kind of energy level are you looking for? Medium high to very high
What do you plan on doing with your dog? Jogging, hikes, dog shows, idk really
What size dog are you wanting? Medium to large
What age dog are you looking for? I prefer young?
What kind of livestyle do you live? (Active, couch potato etc) Fairly active, I'd be more active with the dog

Thanks so much for your help! I will definitely keep this in mind that I might have to wait till after college, after college I will most likely be living in an apartment with my best friend or in my own apartment. I like mixes because most of them are very cute and I like most dogs. However what is IVDD? And what about Dalmations, do they get any type of illness too?

all dogs get genetic issues or health issues if not properly bred or just generally old age. you need to research the breeds you are interested in and their issues.

IVDD or Intervertebral disk disease is a disease that effects the spinal cord over time, but it might not be apparent until there is a trigger. Unfortunately, a dog who appears to be completely healthy one day may take a fall or jump in such a way that a disc becomes ruptured. IVDD is a degenerative (gradual) process, but a jump or fall can damage a disc that has already been weakened by IVDD and bring on an acute phase of the disease.

The disease is caused when the cushioning discs (which function like shock absorbers) between the vertebrae of the spinal column begin to harden. Eventually, they may harden to the point that they can no longer adequately cushion the spinal vertebrae.

Consequently, a forceful jump or bad landing can cause a disc (or discs) to burst and press into the nerves running through the spinal cord. This can be painful and cause nerve damage and/or eventual paralysis.

My life just went upside down in one day . Long story so I'm just going to try and shorten it. My parents have worked for this company for over like 17 years. I've been working with them the past like 3. well our boss is closing offices down and ours is one. So come June I'll be jobless. But the real kicker is that my parents are going to work out the new office he's going to have outside of Atlanta, GA (4 hours away from where my hometown is). So they are going to be moving the family up there. And I'm left with a hard choice. i can move up there and have my job still and Killian.(which will be leaving being my friends and most importantly my boyfriend of almost 4 years). Of I can try to stay down here but i can't afford a place of my own. plus i have to find a new job. I can stay with my Boyfriend but He is not allowed to have pets. he's suppose to try and work it out with the landlord but no promises. And the other place already has reached its pet limit. So theres a chance I might have to find Killian a new home and I really don't wanna loose him

Please don't buy a "dorkie" they are not a real breed, just mutts. If you want a mixed breed dog go to a shelter/rescue instead of supporting BYBs. Since you've never owned a dog before I would recommend fostering first, it will give you a better idea what you can/want to handle. Since you have specific breeds in mind when you're ready look around to find some breed specific rescues.

If you're going to be going to school all day and working I don't recommend a puppy. They need a lot of care and socialization, if you're not able to do that properly you could wind up with a lot of problems later on. An adult or senior dog will already have a more set personality and you'll know what you're getting. They will also have lower energy requirements and be more willing to spend time cuddling.

Dalmatians are prone to deafness, and like most larger dogs can suffer from hip problems, especially if you don't get one from a responsible breeder. They are also extremely high energy, their ideal home environment is a farm and would be very hard to find the time and energy to satisfy their needs enough if you live in an apartment. I would not recommend a Dalmatian for a first time dog owner. Although again, if you're willing to get an older dog you may find one that can fit your lifestyle but it isn't likely.

Dogs that come to mind that might be better suited are Bichons, Maltese, Poodles, Shih Tzu, Coton de Tulear. Be aware though no dog is born being friendly and well behaved. All dogs take a lot of work, time, and money. Especially puppies. Really I think it's a bad idea for first time owners to get puppies, it's just too much to learn too quickly. It's like having a baby, only this one can destroy your house and can bite the neighbors.
