juliall wrote:Have you had dogs before? What breeds?
Yes, I currently have a labrador x pit mix, and a german shepherd x heeler.

Are there any breeds that have already caught your eye? If so, why?
Bernese Mountain Dog, Corgi.
I love the attitudes of the BMD, and have always wanted a Corgi, I think both breeds are quite smart.

How much time a day do you have to devote to training your dog?
I'd like to have at the very least 1-2 hours. I plan on training consistently throughout life as well.

What kind of grooming needs are you prepared to handle?
Whatever the animal needs.

What kind of energy level are you looking for?

I'd like an energy level that isn't too crazy, a dog that I can go out on walks with and play in the yard, but then one that can handle being inside as well.

What do you plan on doing with your dog?
Mostly family dog/companion. I'd like to do obedience just for fun though.

What size dog are you wanting?
I'm alright with any size.

What age dog are you looking for?
Whatever age.

What kind of livestyle do you live? (Active, couch potato etc)
I wouldn't call myself a couch potato, but I'm not super active. I'd love to go on walks, etc.

    heya !!

Out of the two specifically I think that both would be quite good candidates for you.

Both dogs get on reasonably well with others so I don't think you'd have too big of a problem there if that is what Luzien is implying?

Unfortunately a bmd doesn't have the best lifespan. I've known one that's lived to nine, but another that sadly passed at only six years. Corgis however have a better lifespan with the range being around twelve to fourteen years so if you want a dog that'll stick around for awhile, or one that you want to get at a slightly older age, a corgi would perhaps be a good idea?

Also a bmd does have pretty high energy needs. So if your looking for a dog that can be both energetic but knows when to settle down, a corgi would be a better fit. Bernese mountain dogs also don't like being left alone for too long, so you would have to be able to spend a reasonable amount of time with them, whereas a corgi is a lot more tolerate of being alone. Corgis also tend to be better at adapting so if your planning on moving around a bit then I think they'd be better suited ^^

not really because the pitmix...some are real nice gentle dogs :) , some only to some dogs, but also some can be trouble with strong small or large dogs(shelter people tells this) ...it is the lab mix (but the heeler is also full of energy and temper and this in mix with a sheperd could be lots more....so think crazy running around heeler mix with corgi or bernese on the heel all barking running over the lab mix....could happen  ) that makes me a bit worried...i do know two lab mixes who are calm and nice with nearly every dog and pet, and did see some lab who where not so easy with new dogs or small dogs like corki or would get all strange with large dogs.....but i DONT know your dogs so i cant say how they are...you know how they are with other and know if the breed works best with your two dogs...so when you say it is the best, then go for one or even both dog breeds :D :D

and bernese mountain dog can be real strong get difficult once they become teen or adult with other dogs when you dont watch out and Train them with dogs-animal and other people...., thats why i did say it could work when your dogs are calm and gentle...or even when you find the "one" dog who works great with your two dogs... it is always the question with a corgi would your dog accept when the new dog is all in there face, jumps around, nipps the ears or leg, barks and is running like stung by a bee...atleast lots are so when still young...some when old too^^,very lively and playful and some are real vocal, they are herding dogs and show it when not worked well enough and as they are smart they will make stupid things then too...they also can love to nip moving things .. It is important to socialise this breed with other animals, adults, and children when they are very young (breeder Needs to start this already!!!) to not get any anti-social behavior or aggression. due to their herding instinct, they love to chase anything that moves, this can make dogs angry when one does not train this. they are great for sport and trick training and can be so cute with kids and al playful and fun and gentle and great with pets, but it takes work.

the bernese mountain dog is also a herding dog, he is large and strong, a owner i did know from Meeting on street with my dog then, as small kid had two and did say they are a little standoffish with other small-med.dogs, they are lovely in the family and with pets when trained well from puppy on, but can get a interesting temper with lots and lots of barking and harassing of people and pets ....they are not aggressive and never should be! but also not shy, can run a dog over without trouble , ....they can be real one person dog who act aloof to other, but they need regular training all there lives to not change, then they will let a kid or pet sit or step on them without lifting a paw, they even take care of small animal when you did train them well, and will pull them in a small cart around the streets... this is so sweet when you ever see this :) ,
they love to be outdoor near the whole day with there family or herding chicker or sheep, but want to stay in the house wth there family too as they love to be with them when possible all the time... so no kennel dog... not the best endurance so not all sport is good for them like running on a bike is not something many can do, but hiking or swimming most love, or catching ball, even more when you go slow ad take your time on a long nice walk!
but they will not accept stupid behavior of other dogs, pushing over, hitting with paw or holding down with paw and head( the one owner told this......but each dog is different, and i find this way nicer than asap biting some dogs do--> also what owner told)
large dogs like them also need more time to grow up, are puppys till they are around 3years , and learn like them too, one thing done wrong , or a wrong nip at the wrong time from an adult dog they take the wrong way, will and could stay with them all there live, and not easy to handle a large heavy fearful dog or one who cant stand dogs.
but do it right and they are great family dogs who will watch over you ^^

thats why i did say, i if a lab ,pit or sheperd would not work bether in this pack you own already,..
...... as they could have more of the same temper and character, grow up fast like them too, near same breed and the size of them ;) (and you did ask what other think about this..when i understand it right?! only my thought..other will see it different.... but i still think aa nice lab or sheper or pit woul work bether with this two dogs...but i dont know them you know them and will know how they will react to other dogs.)

but you also could try out to find a corgi who is calm enough to not make your dogs get crazy or angry... or a bernese who is gentle enough, fully healthy and maybe a show line for both breeds....i dont know your dogs or how they are and would react to a long time very big puppy or a crazy little ball of energy...both breeds are nice companion dogs and good for family... so try when you want and love them :)
--> so it could work when done well and with care and lots of training for both breeds.

why not look for owner of both breeds in your area, and go for some walks, hiking together with them and there owner, so you see how they react to your dogs and your dogs to there breed.. :?:
Please klick them or they will die°°!!!

I've definitely done my research on BMD lifespan, and I do plan on being extremely picky about which breeder I go with. I will be working in a vet clinic that allows me to bring my dogs, so I would be able to take my BMD with me to work. We also would not get one until We are in a permanent home (which thankfully will be an acreage). We're hoping to introduce a Corgi in a couple years, and then once my oldest pup passes, start saving up for a BMD.

Are there any breeds that have already caught your eye? If so, why? Yes, the Border Collie and Australian Shepherd, They’re absolutely beautiful and seem to fit my lifestyle.
How much time a day do you have to devote to training your dog? Well, maybe 3-4 hours a day at most or whenever I can have someone watch my son so I can train him/her.
What kind of grooming needs are you prepared to handle? Honestly, it doesn’t matter, whatever the dog needs.
What kind of energy level are you looking for? high energy, but can also be laid back.
What do you plan on doing with your dog? Going on walks, dog parks, training him/her in frisbee, maybe agility since I trained my Bernard in that.
What size dog are you wanting? Medium sized
What age dog are you looking for? I don’t have time for the puppy stage so maybe 1-2 years?
What kind of livestyle do you live? (Active, couch potato etc) I’m active, but i’m also a couch potato.

——

I’ve worked on Oppies aggression towards people/other dogs. He has been playing with Beagles recently.

Now, he seems to get along more so with female dogs, so I’d need to get a female.

This won’t be for awhile once my son asks to have a dog of his own or he’s up and walking sturdy (he’s a month right now so not till he’s at least 3-4 years old.)

    @country;

Owning a border collie myself, I really wouldn't recommend one when you have a 3 year old c,: .
Chance is great around kids when they're petting him, but he gets extremely overwhelmed when
they run or start playing. Also, when you want a dog thats also laid back, it can be hard to find in a
border collie. Chance can have a few naps now and then but if we arent outside doing something,
then its just him constantly bringing a toy to me or asking for attention, which might not be good
for the child as well. Your son might be frustrated with a high energy dog's needs and be unsure
with how to communicate this to you, leading him to push or aggravating the dog.

Id definitely recommend a calmer breed, especially since you'll have a young child.

I usually just post him on my own if i ever post anything. I did make him a youtube channel but i think i posted 2 videos before never doing anything on it again.

also Killy did awesome at the doggie carnival!!!! Never tried to go after any dog. Tail wagging the whole time. We did do the derby! First time he got 2nd. he cowered a little at the unfamiliar guy holding him, about an hour lattle i took him again and he got first!!! :D it put him in the big finals at the end but he got 3rd and didn't move on but We had fun ^^

I went to run Jax for my Mom but she ended up doing it because Killy went stupid trying to get to me so we had to switch places xD. Jax got 4th but we are just happy he ran lol
