I think they are alright. I have one for my dog and she is a small breed so it works out great. However for a big dog I cant see them being good at all.

I also think there are only a few places you should go with one. For my dog if I am near any roads, in busy streets, train stations or anywhere else that is busy and has alot of risks I would NEVER bring her in a retractable leash. I also think they should only be used if the dog is on a harness, never with a collar. If I use mine it is when we are in the forest or far from any dangers. Usually she isn't even on it for that long as I will let her run off leash once I know she will be safe.

Personally I think you should train your dog not to pull on a normal leash before even considdering getting a retractable one, only when you have the recall and know your dog wont pull too much, that is when I think it is alright to use one. If you use one too early with the dog not being trained it can easily get habits like pulling.

Of course this is just my opinion xp
Slowly getting back into CS after being on a 2 year hiatus, nice to meet you all again!

@ the retractable lead topic ; it depends on the dog. my older dog has broken so many retractables ( she isn't as strong now and going deaf so we're getting her a new one soon for recall and if that doesn't work, I'll just bring her favourite toy ) My puppy however, is fine on it, yeah it gets tangled easily, especially when playing but overall its pretty good letting him explore with a way to keep them out of danger eg if they don't know if something is as dangerous as it is. (also he has hearing problems which means he can't tell what direction a sound is coming from)

btw these are some photos ;

what is this thing that smells like a dog? (that is an older dog, he is only 4 months!)

Today's hot weather forced Lyra to plunge into the river. Didn't get any photos but she went pretty deep, getting so much closer to proper swimming now - she's becoming a total water baby.

I think they're good for some dogs, but not that durable. My dog would break them so I just use a normal leash.

Same here.
I think that are great for smaller dogs ( my friend has a chihuahua mix and she's pretty small and when she DOES use the leash it's perfect for her ) as it's not as much to control vs using one with a larger breed like a lab.

i haven't even considered using the retractable leash my mom got yet on my pup. She gets really excited around new dogs so using a normal leash is a MUST for her. Also she is still teething on leashes so she would chew RIGHT through them.

Having a regular leash gives me the ability to pull her away from people and animals because she still is jumpy. She's starting to behave better with the jumping but I still don't think a retractable leash will be a consideration until she is way older.

As a dog trainer, I hate them. I see them as laziness honestly, in either not training your dog to have a good recall or not training the dog not to pull. I see it as a huge band-aid on training a dog, and it's not a fix to a problem. Of course, this is case by case.

-------

I think that they can be good.
They are not bad, atleast when you dont use the $5 ones, or ones that are only for small dog on large dogs......
and they cant be destroyd easily when used right.
and we never got them chewed on as we told them "no" in training, they dont chew the leash as they dont see any leash as something bad ....(we still have an old retracable leash that is 10-20y.old...still working well, not broken or such...)

(-->> i use them when in areas where dog need to stay on leash (forrest, city and so on), but still need some running time that my 2 or 3m leash cant give, as an extra i use a i think 20feet lead rope for training or extra space... and have my normal 2 or 3m leash for normal walking or training on streets or such...and the rest of the time she walks free with me...
i dont have a problem with this type leashes.....!!)

They dont really have to do with laziness... :!:
....as dog trainer you should know this ....you cant say all are lazzy, some may be, but....that is like when you say, a fighting breed dogs are bad and dangerous, and pugs as stupid....it is never 100%.... :!:

then there are also older people who cant play and walk as fast as they want too, the same for people who have health trouble... other people who are unsure, with new dog, dangerous places, deaf Dogs, blind Dogs.... also in areas where there is no fenced in place for dogs or a dog park to let them run free and they are safe behind fences, but only have a meadow between streets or whatever place where they can let the dog run a bit with this retracable leashes...and so on...--- so yes they can be good!!!!

and the dog cant get tangled up i them, like in training leash when playing, only like all leashes with an other leash or your legs when dog was fast ;) ... it will happen more often with a normal trainings lead of 10-20feet or more...

and they are not bad while walking in the forrest or such areas, as you can give them some space to sniff and play, but stay safe and protected.
and a dog that is well trained will not pull...or not more than on a normal leash, so owner cant get hurt, and even when you can use the other one type not the small rope ones but the ...and you dont use a retractable leash from a 5pound dog for a 40 or 80 Pound dog...

and also when at show places you rarely have enough free space to give the dog exercise with free running behind fence...so you take what you get...and so on...

--> so why not use them, it is alright for those who know how they are used, for puppy to adult dog, sick or healthy dog, calm or a bit more wild...and so on...
so go for it when you like too, and know how to use it^^
Please klick them or they will die°°!!!

Imzadi- Arent I? The Kessness monster sighting has been a dream come true for me! 😂 I can't believe it even came out of the water for my photos! Lol

And yes she is super silky when she's wet, I love it lol.

Also I am super proud of Kes. This is her second time really swimming, and she was confident enough to jump off the taller bank into deep water that she immediately had to swim in! Maybe we will make a dock diver out of her! Hopefully we can get her on a real dock soon to try!

I may see when her breeder is going to take Kestrel's dad next and go out to meet up with her if she's up for it. Get to see her handsome dad, and show off my girl to her breeder in person lol

There were 20 + dals there! It was amazing :D My pup was the youngest by 1 month. Most were adults and a few older dogs too. My family and a couple with an older dog turned back since the dogs were getting tired and I don't want damage Flynn's growth. It was so great to see them all playing together though, they're as daft as each other

@ Middy
The Loch Kes Monster

So Lilly has taken to walking through the house at 1-2 am and bark once at everyone until they wake up.
She stops when sprayed with water.
I don't have the energy to deal with her tail at 1-2 am so a quick spritz with water makes her stop and listen to the next command, "Blanket". She sleeps on the blanket next to my bed now instead of taking up most of my bed.

I don't think retractable leashes should be seen as a sign of laziness, if that's what works for you, it works and that's it.

Anywayss
I took Xeno to a local park and worked on his basic obedience training. Worked on sit and down and touched up on stay and heel. He did so good, especially because there were a ton of kids, a majority asking or worse just coming up to pet him. I really hate parents who don't teach their kids to ASK before petting a STRANGE dog. But it would be completely my fault if Xeno bit someone. Luckily he's friendly and didn't care about all the sticky and dirty hands all in his fur, but he needs a bath now, which he hates.
