Hello! I am getting a toy Australian shepherd in 20 days and have a quick question. On the first day, is there anything that I have to make sure to do other than give him lots of love and play around with him but let him sleep too? Thank you!!

I didnt touch my pup until she finished exploring. Supervise and if possible leave the backdoor open. Let them explore hide play but if course give them a strict no if their bold.

Thank you! And I have another dog, so should I leave him outside...? And When I let the new pup explore, do I let him explore the whole house? Thank you so much!

i'd suggest letting them only explore a little area at a time. after a day or two is when you can introduce a new room or something like that. at first the whole house might be overwhelming.

For the first day I'd suggest allowing him to explore his surroundings
and feel comfortable. After 2 or 3 days, you can begin to train the
pup! Try to only use positive training !

    @webmonkey
A strict "no" will most likely confuse and scare a young and new puppy.
If they do something you don't want, you can't just say something
to them and expect them to know it.

For play biting/ teething : give your puppy a chew toy if they start teething
    on your hand.

For barking : this one is hard as you will have to leave your pup alone until they
stop. Once they stop, reward your pup with a treat and say "good boy!" and "yes!"
to show them that once they stop, they get something !

Potty training : this will take some time, but never punish a dog for using the
bathroom in the wrong spot. After eating, take the pup outside. Try bringing
him outside every 30 minutes. Bring treats so that when he goes to the bathroom
in the right spot, you can reward him c: !

Since he is a herding breed, make sure to start socializing him as soon as possible !
Feel free to pm me if you have any more questions !

I just fed Lilly. And she's a very interesting eater it seems?
I feed her Pinnacle Peak kibble.
We are transitioning her into what the other dogs eat, Purina dog chow. This pup picks through her Peak and hunts down the Purina and eats that and leaves the Peak. We ended up just mixing the Peak and the Purina in the bin and that's what all the dogs are going to eat from now on.
Also!!! Her ears are starting to stand up!
One still flops, and the tip of the other is still floppy, but one is standing up, for the most part.
Also they tend to stand up when she lays on her side, so that's why they're both up in the picture below.

I took her cone off early and her best friend, Thor, is back to cuddling with her instead of snapping and attacking her. He didn't realize that this was his buddy in the cone of shame, it seems. Lilly is healed almost completely externally, and acting like everything is fine and she didn't have glue holding her belly together, though we are still keeping her confined for a few more days just to be safe.

(Large picture, I'm sorry)

Lady and Tyler got into a minor fight last night. Tyler growled at my Dad who kissed my mom and Lady snapped at Tyler, biting at his face, holding onto his lip. No skin was broken and both dogs got disciplined for the fight and then went back to snugling their respective humans.

Gizmo got passed around today with the phrase, "That's my 'Gimo'!" And we walked around he house carrying this little dog who was more than happy to get attention. It was a pretty fun game of keep away and Gizmo got plenty of pets and positive attention while we passed the dog around.

It's Pete's adoption day today.I think it was actually a couple days ago, but we didn't set it there because I was going through a lot of rough stuff and couldn't see him after his initial adoption until 4 days later. This is him a year ago. Hes such a great dog. Hes sleeping by my feet right now. He had some aggression issues that are almost gone, he was still only about 9 months when we got him and through a lot of positive reinforcement he can now be around dogs. Pete is just so good, he's sleeping by my feet right now.

We adopted him in memory of my dog Dean, who had died the day before. Dean was my first dog and only friend for a long time. I think he'd be happy with Pete (and JJ) taking up his role.

Question - at what age did you start taking your dog out for walks and how long?

There's this 5 mintues rule, but does it count if you take your puppy in the forest to explore? I don't want to overstimulate my puppy.

After the last inoculation and the wait time was up we started taking ours out but we carried them up and down to the shop with us ( twice a day about a 10 minute walk) so they got use to people and traffic before the jabs were done.

I wouldn't let them walk even in the woods as they can still pick stuff up. If your worried about socialising just carry them to the shops or something just don't put them down till after all the inoculations are done ( and the wait time after is up ) its made it easier for ours to get use to people and traffic and leash work so much easier.

Walks were only short about 10 to 15 minutes again up and down to the shops but its made longer with puppies in to every smell and hedgerow
