Sorry to ask again but how do you tell the genders of fish?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's different for all fish. If you're talking about Bettas, they'll be labeled, but...eh.

well for some fish its easy, it might be the color or the size of their fins, betta males, you can tell because they have larger fins and the colors are brighter and prettier than a females, what fish do you want to know the gender for?

Depends on the fish. Goldfish are really hard to gender but you can look at their anal fins. I think if the fins are closer its a male if its farther apart its a female. Its not really reliable but for a 100% way to tell is to wait until they are full grown. Males will get white bumps on their gills and pectoral fins and will chase the females.

Bettas are easier. Males will have long flowing fins and females have short fins. Unless the male is platke(sp?). They will have short fins but they will be longer than the females.

Ok thanks, I thought it might be the same for all fish because every time I buy fish it always seems to turn out that I have all of one gender as they never breed. Why might that be?

Normally males are more pretty than females so they get sold more often.

Hey guys, anyone want to help me pick out a new fish for my tank?
Going fishing soon, hoping to find something neat for my tank. Whatever it will be will be a california coastal native, but I'm not sure what to try to get.
Maybe a lizardfish? Or a halibut might be cool.
Any other ideas?
