I would think salt and water changes would be fine. If you don't see any improvement then I would do the medcine. Make sure you use the right salt. I use Morton's canning and pickling salt for my goldfish when they get sick or QTing. One teaspoon per gallon. Here is a Wikipedia page saying you can treat it with salt and a page about the salts you can use.

I'm not sure if the dosage for a betta would be the same for a goldfish but I would think it would be. Do more research on that before you add the salt though.

So, I might be getting a betta soon for my birthday, and I have two questions about it.

1. Do you have to cycle the tank before you put the fish in? And can someone explain to me how you do that? I've done plenty of research but I can't find anything that's helpful.

2. Do you perfer male bettas or female bettas?

1 ] you cycle your tank 24 hours before the fish is placed into it.
Basically you just set everything up in the tank, add the water, and if you have a filter, let it filter over the period of time. If you'll be using tap water you might also want to get something to help the water be more safe for your new fish. During the 24 hours it allows the water to become room temperature and the water is cleaner, and ready to house the fish.

2 ] Males are the pretty ones. Unfortunately they have to be kept by themselves. Females can be kept in groups of three or more, but their color is a little blander. I personally prefer females, I have a ten gallon with 4 of them, with a few other fish. They all get along great.

Hope this helped a little c:

Fascai has some great advice for that. But I have a few things to add that I learned doing some extensive research on bettas XD

First, you might already know this, but if you don't: Try to get a bigger tank for your betta fish. They can survive in the small half-gallon ones, yes, but it's much better for the fish if you can get a bigger one. I have mine in a two gallon right now with a mystery snail, a small filter, and a moss ball to help oxygenate the water.

Personally, I love both males and females XD I had a female once that I got as a very small little neglected betta and she greeeeeew until she was bigger than my males. I think it's really all a matter of preference, and of course, the fish's personality. If you have a choice between the pretty fish and the fish that looks like he actually notices you're there, pick the one that's more engaging.

Hey guys :)
Well I've got bad news, almost all of my betta fry died, and my new betta Electric tore up his whole anal fin, and he's not doing to good D :
On another note, my pet store got a huge shipment of bettas, about 30 in bags and 10 on the selve, lucky most were blue and red so I didn't fall In love with one xD though, they got a large shipment of cories and goldies haha <3 I still don't have the pond up for goldies though. I really want a baby albino and panda Cory, badly xD

Cute goldies Dakotak <3

It is a similar story when attempting to house a group together in the aquarium. This is a fish that lives a solitary lifestyle and in nature probably only comes into contact with others of its own kind infrequently and during the spawning season. Intraspecific hostility is pronounced and it is not uncommon to see tanks full of young specimens with tattered fins on sale. These instincts only heighten as the fish get older and we therefore recommend it be kept singly in the vast majority of cases. In a large tank with lots of hiding places a cohabitation attempt might be possible and it is true that success has been achieved more often with this species than other

Apparently flying foxes are a solitary species that is aggressive toward it's own O.o separate them, AlphaWolf. Did you do any reading on these before you got them?

Ah okay. There may be several subspecies, so I'm not sure XD I looked on a few sites and all of them said they're aggressive toward their own and other similar-looking fish, so *shrug* Not sure what to tell you otherwise.
