I really want an interactive bird and I know what to do and how to care properly for more birds, but, does anyone know a good starter bird? One that I can still go to school with having and still go to my father's house two days a week?
Edit: The bird will not ever be alone, as my step-father works at home and will always keep watch, feed, take it out, etc
A tame female ringneck dove sounds like what you would like. Usually when people think of doves as a pet, they imagine it would be a flighty bird that sits in a cage and coos. However, ringnecks are extremely tame and interactive pets. All of mine love meeting new people and pets, free flying, shoulder rides, and going out on the harness but are happy to sit still and recieve pettings. Female ringnecks are very quiet, whereas males make a ton of noise and laugh; if it's going to be a pet get a female.
The only con is that they can be messy, but are certainly not as messy as my budgerigars. They swallow seeds whole, so there's no messing around with seed hulls everywhere. They are not high maintenance like parrots. If you leave the bird for a month and come back, it will be just as tame as when you left; the majority of small parrots I've had would need to be re-trained if you left them unhandled for even a couple days.
