@Luzien Well, the thing is... you are assuming that the owner of the husky was being responsible. You are assuming that he was seated completely away from all of the other dogs, and was "controlling" his husky. You also assumed that Toby was running around him and teasing him. All of these assumptions are wrong.
The owner of the husky was walking around the park with the husky. He was bringing him close to the dogs. He was letting his husky snap, bark, growl at the dogs. While I was playing frisbee with Izzy he walked up behind us and his dog was lunging, barking, growling uncontrollably. The owner then proceeded to choke the husky and yell at him saying " BAD DOG!". The owner then proceeded and walked up to my friend and her golden doodle named Emma. Emma was terrified of this husky and even hid between her owners legs.
This man was not sitting away from the other dogs. He was getting into OUR space, we were in no way invading his. Lets say while he was walking his extremely aggressive husky around the park, the dog pulled too hard, owner proceeded to lose control and let go of leash and the husky attacked a dog. Would that still be our faults because our dogs were playing with each other? no.
This is completely the husky owners fault. Just like everyone has stated, it is not safe to force a extremely dog aggressive dog around dogs who are off leash and playing. And like everyone said, Dog parks in America are designated for off leash play. It is an inclosed area that is designed for FRIENDLY dogs to play off leash together. This is no place to socialize an aggressive dog. I understand it may be different in the UK, and I understand the difference between dog parks in the UK and dog parks in America. You need to understand and learn the difference too before you insult people.
Blu Mal lives in the same town I do, and she has worked with tons of dogs. So she has plenty of experience training reactive dogs. Plus she has studied dog body language and plenty of other things. Anyway, all the information she listed was off of the county's police department page under "Dog parks". They apply to all dog parks in our county and should be followed. Like she said, he broke 3-4 rules. If he had not broken those rules there would have not been a fight.
Honestly, next time I see him I will probably call animal control. Just like you said, I should make sure my dogs are safe. I sure will! I am calling animal control next time he tries to bring that dog to the park. I am not risking him accidentally letting go of the leash and him killing my 10 pound scottie mix or injuring my boxer mix. I need to take care of my dogs, and my friends are concerned about their dogs. We should not have to leave the park because he brings an aggressive dog to the park. We shouldn't have to worry about our dogs safety in an area that should be safe for them.
As a responsible dog owner, especially one of a fearful and aggressive dog... You should never do this. This puts the owner at a HUGE liability. There are tons of things that could go wrong. And if I owned a highly aggressive dog I would never take it to a dog park. Knowing my dog could seriously injure another persons dog is not okay. Plus at a dog park there would be off-leash dogs. That is not somewhere I would take my aggressive dog. So no, it is in no way Toby's owners fault. This is 100% on the huskies owner. Toby's recall has nothing to do with it either. He belongs to an old retired couple, therefore they could not grab him quick enough to stop him from sniffing the dog who shouldn't be there in the first place. And I know you described Airedale's as "Beasts" but Toby is probably one of the most gentle dogs I have ever met. Just because the breed itself is known for a certain characteristic does not mean all dogs follow that characteristic. Since you know so much about dogs you should know that. I have met Labs, and Goldens who are supposed to be "SUPER friendly, and Family dogs" turn out to be some of the meanest things on the planet. So just because of he is a Airedale does not mean he follows all of those characteristics.
Another thing you said was " What if the husky was attacked by a dog when it was younger" Okay, well why force a dog into an extremely stressful situation? It is like a dog who has been abused and hit, and chained to a leash outside for so long that it tore though it's skin. Are you going to place a leash back on that dog and leave him outside until he is okay and not stressed out? Are you going to try and forcefully pet it even though it is terrified of hands? That will stress the dog out like no other and is a very inhumane way of training a dog. I do nothing but positive reinforcement training with my animals. This man was forcing his husky to interact with other dogs. And then when the husky reacted in an appropriate way to his personal situation the owner choked him. The dog was clearly stressed out and overwhelmed. He did not want to be there, and the owner was not helping him. He was in fact setting his dog up for failure and making him worse.
Cardinal wrote:As someone who owns a dog that would willingly and happily destory another dog... You dont bring your agressive dog to a dog park????? Ever???? You fully know that there will be unleashed dogs at a dog park??? Why set your dog up to fail??? Like.. it makes no sense. At all. The husky owner is a dumdum. I normally think that dog owners should control their dogs.. but if youre in a safe area designed for offleash play.. Im not as strict about it. You dont bring your aggresdive dog into an area designed for offleash play. -_-
I completely agree!! Owners should definitely control their dogs when it isn't in an area like a dog park. I always make sure my dog is under control when we go hiking or walking etc. I would never let them approach a dog who is on leash while we were hiking. But as you said, when a place is designated for off leashed dogs to play I would not bring a dog like that there. In this case he should have been more responsible about his husky. But I am completely with you. I am all about owners controlling their dogs. And I actually get really upset when my dog is on a leash while walking or training at a public park, and someone lets their dog off leash and it runs up to me and my dog. But at a dog park... Toby is fully allowed to be off leash. Thank you for your input! It is always helpful getting insight from someone who understands what a dog aggressive dog is like. Plus you are showing how a responsible dog owner is supposed to act like! lol
