I put her back in the breeder (which has holes on the bottom), and woke up this morning to maybe like 4 babies. I went to a workshop, and came back just now to see that they are nowhere to be seen. I was SO happy she'd finally given birth, and what happens? THE BABIES DONT FALL THROUGH THE HOLES AND AS A RESULT HAVE BEEN EATEN.
Way to go, mama.
I think she still has some in there, however, since the black spot is still there. I'm really hoping, anyways. I hope I can save some of them.
Looks like I won't be going to the second half of the workshop...
I'm sorry they got eaten! I've honestly found that the way that worked best for me and my guppies was to leave the mama in the main tank. I had a bunch of plants and areas to hide, and the babies used to hide in the gravel, too. They stayed alive long enough for me to get them out and into their own tank. One time I even had one grow up a month in there before I was finally able to catch her! I would always put in 3/4 of the regular food ration, then 1/4 finely crushed food. That way any babies that I didn't get out had a good fighting chance. Some of the babies got eaten of course, but I still ended up with 20+ babies every spawn. Luckily there were a lot of pet stores around me that were willing to take them! I personally found that once the mom slims back down, it might take a bit for the black spot to go away, but it will shrink down considerably. Are you sure they all got eaten? I know my current goldfish babies and my old guppy ones used to hide really well. I swear they could turn invisible!
What does your guppy look like? I used to have blue, black, red, yellow, green, and even a few clear ones! Gosh, I miss my guppies so much!
I moved her to the fry tank, which has a clear bottom and not many places to hide so i'd be able to see them. There's no other fish in it. I used a soft filter and checked it to make sure they didn't get sucked up, which they didn't. The whole point of a breeder is so the fry go through those holes so mama doesn't eat them.
Well, just in case there's any more I put a large snail shell in the breeder, so the babies can hide under it and mama can't get them.
She is a little bit more slim but still looks pretty round and big. Like, it only went down a little bit.
I've had such bad luck with fry. First with my platy's, they all died. I just plain wasn't prepared for them.
And now I am fully prepared, bought baby food, got a breeder, a new tank, and what happens? She eats them.
Feeling really discouraged now.
Here's a picture of her and what her belly looked like
