So petsmart has a 10gal for $10 and I'm debating on whether or not to get it for a betta or two(I would split the tank). The other option I was thinking was a 2.5gal set up. If prefer the 10, but it's not practical with the space I have in my apartment, but I also don't want to get a tank too small for a betta. Is a 2.5 too small? Thank you for any input/help ^-^

2.5g is definitely on the small side, personally i'd try to aim for at least a 5g minimum (or a 10g for two)- however 2.5g is fine for a betta none the less. (: i only have 10g's so i can't speak for 2.5g or 5g, but the bigger the tank the easier it is to have. from what i've heard they're a lot more stable then smaller tanks because ammonia and waste don't build up as quickly ^^'

I'm looking for a little fish choosing help. After giving away my rummynose tetras I'm setting up my 75g as an Asian river tank. Natural sand, branches, piles of rocks, boulders. I'd like to have a group of 12-16 giant danios (I already have four) and some algae eater(s). The danios are a definite but I'm not sure on what algae eater species to go with. I only know of two native to flowing rivers in Asia - Chinese algae eaters and Siamese algae eaters. The Chinese are a no, since they tend to get aggressive and vicious in community tanks, but I'm not sure about the Siamese. I know they're peaceful but I read in a seriouslyfish.com article that access to too much protein foods will cause organ issues. My danios are on a high protein frozen and live only diet (with supplemented veggies of course) so I'm thinking SAE would not be a good idea. Anyone know of any other algae eaters from Asian rivers? c:

Its all about personal comfort level, I honestly feel very comfortable with a 2.5 gallon, but nothing less. Currently I have my 5.5 gallon divided, so at 2.75 gallons per fish, i'm pretty happy. I haven't had any issues with my tanks, but every case is different, so if you go smaller, just keep an eye on how everything's doing.

srry for the double post! but was doing a little research and stumbled upon a couple more that are in the same family, the, flying fox algae eater and the False Siamensis (aka garra taeniata) , both look very similar, and may be worth checking out!

Isn't flying fox just another name for SAE? The false SAE look good though, especially since they need protein rich foods in their diet so they'd fit in well with the danios! Definitely considering them, thank you.

nope! i don't believe a flying fox is the same, though it often gets mistaken as a SAE from what i can tell there are 4 different species, the flying fox, CAE, SAE and the false SAE

Thanks for the image! It seems that a lot of websites mistakenly claim SAE and flying fox to be the same species. Wish it wasn't so complicated!

So I've been worried about Thymes recently because he seems kind of weak, I'm not sure if he's actually weak or if his fins are just a bit heavy for him and weigh him down. He doesn't have any trouble swimming and he's not lethargic anymore so ?? It's just that he gets pushed around by the filter easily (It's already been baffled it shouldn't be able to do that), doesn't flare, and will sometimes just sit still for short periods . I've heard that bettas that have larger fins tend to be a bit slower, could that just be what's happening here or should I keep a closer eye on him ? He's still active, he will still eat, and he doesn't seem sick or anything so ??

On a lighter note, I'm pretty sure Thymes is on a mission to make the largest bubble nest ever, he won't stop adding more bubbles to it
Daniel also made his first bubble nest a while ago, but it's like a 1/3 of the size of Thymes's

i have a double tail halfmoon that is very lazy from his big heavy fins, he just finds spots around the tank to lay at all day. he's definitely the laziest of my six bettas or any betta i've had. i give him lots of spots to lay and rest at, he espeically loves his floating betta logs. at one point he practically lived in it before finding new places to rest haha.

what kind of tank and baffle do you have? deff sounds like it's too strong, and for a long finned betta like him it would help him a lot to get the current under control.

on another note- you mention that he's not lethargic anymore? was he sick prior to this behavior?
