Two more tetras dies D: It's really odd - the first one I saw was swimming vertically, head upright at the bottom of the tank, and it was covered in ick, so I decided the kindest thing to do would be to euthanize it. When I came back the poor thing had died and been sucked into the filter. The second time I saw a fish swimming oddly (not quite vertical, but still oddly) I decided to net it but leave it in the tank so it didn't get sucked in, and surely enough it died too. Then I saw another fish swimming at a strange angle at the top of the tank and gradually floating towards the filter. I netted that one, too, and it also died. Then this morning my remaining eight tetra weren't eating, kept swimming to the bottom of the tank like the others, and then back down for a bit. They also only had the tiniest bit of food this morning, the rest I had to fish out. I've tested my parameters again:
Amm: 0.1 mg/l (I was thinking it might be something to do with this? I could buy some ammonia remover?)
Nitrite: 0.0 mg/l
Nitrate: 0.0 mg/l
PH: 7.0
Temp: 27 C

I've been researching all morning but I couldn't find anything. I thought it might be swim bladder but they seem to be able to swim properly when they want to - nevertheless I might feed them a pea just in case? All signs of ick on the remaining fish have gone, but I'll still continue the meds in half doses when the next one is required to make sure. I've just done another 25% water change, and none of the fish are staying at the top anymore. However I can only count seven - I really don't have a clue what happened to the eighth :c We're going to get them some extra plants to make them feel more comfortable this afternoon, and an air stone in case it's an oxygenation problem.

EDIT: I found number eight! He was just hiding c:
EDIT EDIT: Okay so we now have an air bubbler for oxygenation and three new hygrophila plants. The neons seem to really like them! I fed them a few peas earlier in case it was swim bladder, but they only really nibbled at a few of them. They're no longer staying at the surface which is good, but a few are swimming wonkily. I'll keep on with the peas and the daily water changes so hopefully they'll do them some good. I have some aquarium salt and vallisneria spiralis set to arrive on Wednesday (I think?).

How many fish can go in a 36 gallon bow front salt water tank? We just downgraded our 55 into a 36 and 27 gallon tanks. Live reef.

Also, any monster fish enthusiasts here? I've posted a few times and never get any responses :(

Soo, there's been a change of plans, instead of a 5 gallon I'm going with a 10 gallon.
I already have an idea of what plants I'm going to use, although if you all know any good live plants for betta tanks I'll gladly take suggestions.

That all depends on the pH, lighting, fertilizers, substrate. But if you're a beginner to planted tanks I recommend java fern and anubias. They're very hardy and do well in most tank conditions.

If you're getting live plants, I STRONGLY suggest that you also get two assassin snails.
More often than not, live plants come with pesky snail eggs that will basically take over your tank. Assassin snails will eat them and keep your tank clear of them. And they're not too bad to look at, either. Pretty black and white stripped shells, so won't make your tank look bad with just the two snails.

IME, pest snails will only take over if you overfeed or have a surplus of dying plant/animal matter for them to feed on. They can actually be very helpful in their own right and contribute to the aquarium ecosystem.
Don't wait to deal with the snails on plants until the snails are in the tank. That's a silly way to go about dealing with a problem really. Instead, dip all new plants: http://www.plantedaquariumscentral.com/ ... nails.html

My tank was brand new, only a week old, when they started showing up and breeding. My plants were very healthy, I think there was one dead leaf from when I got it from the store. They started eating it and now that entire plant is dying BECAUSE of them. And I wasn't overfeeding either, my betta ate all his food and any that he didn't was eaten by my shrimp. The only thing I can think of other than that is the algae wafers, which my oto's sometimes took maybe three days to fully eat.
Either way though, the assassin snails will do the same job as the pest snails, except you can keep the over-breeding to a minimum.
Ultimately it's the owners choice, but neither option is wrong!

I can say with almost certainty that it was the algae wafers that at least encouraged the snails. Food should never be left in a tank for three days. It decomposes over the days (causing nitrates and TDS to rise) and some of the nutrients are lost so by the time the fish eat the food it isn't completely healthy. Break algae wafers into small enough pieces that it will be completely eaten within a day.

Nope, they won't do the same job actually. Now I'm not saying either is better, or one is bad, or anything like that. You need to do what you need to do to maintain your tank, and that will vary from tank to tank. But assassin snails are carnivores so if they have meat options (such as snails) they won't eat any algae. Most pest snail species will.
