I'm in need of some advise, I'm afraid.

I have owned bettas for a few years and have always prided myself on how pristine their water is kept. I have six bettas now and have never had any issues with disease or temperament. All have been healthy and friendly. However, my newest betta seems to have developed fin rot literally over night. His fins appeared perfectly normal one moment, and then the next they were in tatters. Because he is extremely skittish and tends to dart around his tank whenever something "spooks" him, I thought that he had somehow managed to tear his fin on something, but it only seems to be getting worse. If I post some before and after pictures, might anyone be able to tell me if it is indeed fin rot? I don't want to risk stressing him out further with treatment if he really is just tearing them. But if he is biting them, then what? I really don't know what to do. :c

Additional info: Though I do not use real plants (I can never seem to keep them alive), I use only silk plants other than his leaf hammock, which is plastic.

i cant believe i haven't seen this thread omg

hello! i have 2 betta fish. I have had them for about a year, they are both males and one of them is red and one is blue with a black head. Their names are mr whiskers (red) and caviar (blue)

First, i had 3, Sushi, josh and caviar. Sadly early last year Sushi passed away, then we were left with josh and caviar. Sadly late last year, josh passed away and we got mr whiskers who looks exactly like sushi, sometimes i accidently call him that.

Pls be nice....

How many gallons is your tank?: One Gallon
Number and Type of fish in tank: One Betta Fish
How long has it been running?: About two weeks
Did you cycle it?: no ;-;
If possible what are the ammonia nitrite and nitrate levels?: No idea
What is the issue or question?: My betta fish, Nebula has been just floating on top of the tank and hiding behind his smoll filter, even behind it. When I go to see if he's living he quickly swims away in a panicy motion. Even when I'm not right by the tank he starts to swim around in circles quickly and bangs into stuff.
Any other information?: Please be nice, this is my first time owning a betta fish. ;o;

A 1gallon tank is to small for a betta fish, they need 2.5+ gallons with 5 gallon being much better. Anything under 2.5 gallond is unsafe to heat properly and betta fish need heaters to remain healthy.
Honey, it's in the stars
And you're my everything from here to Mars
And every word I say I truly mean
Dear darling, I hope I'm being clear
'Cause there's no one like you on earth
That can be my universe

I would since my poor Luna got it, but he's all better now! You can usually tell if the edges of the teared fins are brownish black and if it keeps getting worse. (like how you described). I treated the water with salts and kept the tank light off and he's all better now! but you should get professional medical advice.

honestly i'm already pretty sure it's fin rot because leaf hammocks are pretty safe as far as i'm concerned.

I've heard of silk plants tearing betta fins. Especially some, that have a hard plastic part in the middle of the base that keeps the base attached to the plant part. It looks kind of like a flower bud and I've had to file all of mine down. He could also be biting? But definitely post pictures. That way we can tell if it's fin rot, but that much damage usually doesn't happen over-night.

I can definitely tell you if it's fin rot or biting, or both, if you post some photos c:

Sorry that this has taken so long. Here are some photos of Paragon as he looks today, which is so much worse than he looked when I first noticed. It's scary how quickly this seems to be progressing. If this is too picture-heavy, then I am terribly sorry.

For reference, this is what he used to look like. The comparison is devastating.

Looks to me like biting. From what I've seen and experienced, fin rot doesn't happen over-night, and usually can be identified by dark grey or black looking edges on the fish's fins. That would be easily spotted on your beautiful light-coloured boy. There's a few little black spots on his dorsal and caudal but it could be the angle, lighting, or his natural colour (I see he has some black marble to him). I would suggest maybe some stress coat until you get a clear diagnosis. What is his tank like? Is it heavily planted, bare, does he have places to hide and explore? Do you exercise him (let him flare at his reflection)? Some bettas bite when they get bored. It could also be a spike in your ammonia or pH stressing him out. Do partial water changes every day to keep the tank pristine and make sure the water stays warm. This should help him destress and will slow down fin rot a touch if there is any.
