I doubt he'd eat them, since he's a dwarf and they probably won't fit in his mouth, but I suppose it could be a possibility. Very rare though.

I've seen a betta eat small/juvenile neon tetras and I don't think dwarf gouramis aren't that different in size compaired to bettas. So I'd say if the store gets their neons as small as some of our local stores, the risk of them being eaten is there, if put together with a fish with habbits of eating smaller fish.

If they're very very small, then yes. I've bought some black skirts that were just the absolute tiniest things before, but most of my neon tetras are fairly decent sized when I get them. But for a gourami, just look at it's mouth... it basically thinks of food as the equivalent to cats thinking about boxes. "If it fits, I sits" or in the gourami's case, "if it fits, I eats"

Just have to quickly say that betta fish have taken on nearly adult sized tetras before and won :P It isn't the most common thing sure, but it can definitely happen! Since gourami come from the same family and have similar dietary needs I'd be cautious if the neons are small. I personally would buy them first simply because of the territorial nature gourami's can have, but size can be an issue too.

Essentially I'd say that if you're adding neons with a gourami... just be sure to decide in your head that the possibility of the gourami killing them is there. Might not be a high chance but it's a risk all the same, so be sure you're okay with that possibility before going ahead. As a shoaling fish they should hopefully be alright, but in a smaller tank like a 10g you need to keep an eye out ;)

On an unrelated note I wanted to share three of my personal boys and their tanks <3 Slowly working on acquiring stuff to improve my aquascape, but as an unemployed university student that isn't the easiest xD

I apologize for the quality, haven't uploaded the pictures from my good camera yet!!!

We have a dwarf gourami with some tetras. He does try to chase them occasionally but he's way too slow to catch them. RUmmynoses are also slightly bigger than neons c:

Goldfish are not at all suitable as a companion for bettas, nor should they be kept in 10 gallon tanks :c Bettas need warm water to thrive while goldfish need cooler water.
Goldfish also get massive and need a much bigger tank than 10 gallons. The absolute minimum for one alone is 20 gallons and even that is on the small side.

Thank you so much for all your help everyone C: I'll get the neons and wait a bit, and then get the gourami. I hope they do get along but I'm prepared if they don't ( D: ). I really wish I could have a bigger tank like a lot of you, but I can't afford it :c Maybe when I'm older.

@Temperance. - Those bettas are beautiful! I really love Cyrus <3 And your aquascaping is awesome!

I make my own dividers for my 10 gallons. I've only had a few problems with them that were caused by me not putting them in properly. I use the black plastic canvases from Walmart. They're about 2 dollars for a pack of three. What were you wondering about?

Sorry, just now seeing this. I made a divider for my 5.5 using plastic report binders and black needlepoint plastic mesh. Works great. However, the report cover/binders I cut to first firmly between the floor of the tank and the lip of the tank, and the tension holds the divider firmly in place, no problems. However, when I went to make a divider for a 10 gallon I noticed that the tank is 12 inches high (compared to the 10 inch height of my 5.5 gallon) and the plastic report binders are only 11 inches tall, so theyou wouldn't do me any good in the 10 gallon. Is the mesh itself stable enough without the plastic binders on the ends of the mesh?

It is for me. You can't put any betas in that are too small, but mine have never pushed through. I always drag a finger along the sides of it after every water change. As long as your finger can't get through with gentle pressure, the fish wont. c: That's how my fish have gotten through before. I didn't check well enough. Luckily they were pretty docile fish, so they didn't start fighting, and I was in the room to get them out.

Hello!
There's this brown thing that's growing in my tank. It's sort of like this. I mean, the brown stuff isn't a thick piece of vegetatioin or anything, it's just attacked to the sides, plants, and decor of the tank. You can scrub it off with an algea scrubber, but can anyone give me the specific name? And any way to get rid of it? I get it off once a week, but it's pretty time-consuming to do it. And it looks bad. ( That's not my main concern, but, it's hard to have a pretty tank when the plant has brown stuff on it. )
It has a betta in it, it's a 5 gallon, every week I change 1/3 of it's water. The light is on 8-9 hours a day.
Thanks!
I used to be sugar pixel .

Can you also rub it off fairly easily with your fingers? Makes sort of brown cover on things? If yes, then it's most likely certain type of brown algae, not sure if it has any other name in english... It's pretty common in new set ups, and it's said to like high silicate levels and low light. Usually it should go away on it's own in time and with cleaning it up. Thriving plants also help, but that is tricky to get when the slime tries to suffocate the plants(=why you need to clean it up). I think I got it in my tank for about week or two, then I got fed up with it, bought few otos(were on my shopping list anyway for the tank) which cleaned up everything in day or two(and were very fat looking after that). XD
How long you've had the tank running and how long have you had the brown stuff? Any idea how much nitrate is in the tank? What type of lights? You could try adding a light break during the day(=shut them for hour or two). Not sure if it would help though, but some say algaes don't like it while plants don't mind it.

A 10 gallon is generally too small for tankmates - and betta (assuming you mean the splendens or gladiator species) are highly aggressive to essentially every fish (in my experience even snails, shrimp and corys - the 3 most recommended "safe" tankmates.) and it's highly not recommended due to the fact that it's dangerous and stressful to all parties in the tank. If you want flashy, bright flowy fish get guppies - don't want babies? Get one sex.

But, seeing you already got the betta, then there's nothing you can really put in a 10 with it other than pygmy corydoras, and even that I'm a bit unsure on. But, if you are okay with inverts, try ghost, cherry or bamboo shrimp. You might end up with the shrimp nipping the betta's tail or the betta eating the shrimp, though. Or, you could try snails - nerites, to be exact, since they stay small forever and they can't reproduce unless in brackish water.

Good luck.

Please separate the two. Betta and goldfish are not compatible species - and not just because of personality. While, yes, the betta will be extremely stressed out by the goldfish and the goldfish vise versa, that's not the only problem. Goldfish can not be kept in a 10 gallon - absolutely no species of goldfish, and especially if they are a comet/common/"fair fish" species. They can reach up to be 12 INCHES LONG and minimum of EIGHT INCHES. They require 100g/per fish and should only ever be kept in ponds with extremely experiences owners. All other species of goldfish need 20/30g per fish.

Another thing? Goldfish shouldn't be kept without other goldfish - they are extremely social creatures who easily get lonely, meaning, when you separate them you will have to have at least a 40 gallon tank and you need to purchase another - of the same species, generally. And another thing, a goldfishes bioload is so massive that a 10 gallon will become completely toxic to them and deadly to them and everything else in the tank within just 8 hours or so.

Not only that but they have different water needs, a goldfish is a coldwater fish and a betta a tropical. Betta prefer 76-84 degrees, generally 78 degrees and goldfish need anywhere from 58-72 degrees. Keeping a betta in colder water to satisfy the goldfish can cause the betta to become lethargic, emaciated, cold and cause organ failure and ultimately death. Keeping goldfish in hotter water to appease the betta will cause the goldfish to become oxygen deprived, lethargic, nerve damage and organ failure - and again, ultimately death.

Goldfish also prefer neutral pH and betta prefer soft pH, and while betta can withstand the pH being a little harder it overall stunts the betta, shortens its lifespan and dramatically lowers the quality of life for the betta to be forced on the edges of it's requirements to appease an unnatural and unnecessary pair.

Please rehome or find a new tank for the goldfish, and get the goldfish a friend.

Good luck, to you too!

Yep, and yep. The tank is running for 2 years, that's what mystifies me the most. I asked this same question about a year ago. It's definitely less bad than it was back then, but reading back your posts, I'm going to try them again. It was on page 60.
Brb, I need to attack the tank with an old credit card XD (metaphorically of course. that actually sounds pretty useful though.)
Tank running: Two years One month.
I never really considered it a big issue, so I didn't keep track. It's just been mildly hanging around for a while.
Nope, sorry!
I don't really know, but it's LED. If you search up "fluval 5 gallon" Skip the pictures. Then it's the first one that shows up.

He was just put in there for the winter, he lives in my pond out back...
I have also have had many goldfish for over 10 years, all of the same breeding. I have around 20 living out there at the moment. I have never added any, and they thrive. I know the needs of both bettas and goldfish. I know exactly how large a goldfish can get, I have many very large ones, this goldfish was quiet smaller, and was too young to thrive in the winter (I have very very cold winters) I have lost a few already this winter, and wanted to keep this one safe in my indoor tanks. My betta has had goldfish companions in the past, and a ten gallon tank is fine, and quite large enough for one season.

And after all, its only a goldfish.

I hate commenting in here, I totally forgot how ridiculous some people here are. Sorry if I offended you because of how I keep my fish, but I think if I can keep a school (I dont care what its actually called) of healthy goldfish for over ten years, my fish are fine and happy.
