I've planted my fish tank! I have an Anubis plant, a Java fern, some hair grass and three moss balls. I'll add more when I can afford it as I know my fish will need more room to hide. I've used filter start to cycle my tank and I'll be adding my first fish on Sunday but first I have a few questions x

1. Should I get my dwarf gourami first or my seven neon tetra?
2. Should I do a 25% water change before I get the fish?
3. Do I leave the light on overnight/do I ever turn it off?
4. Any other plant suggestions?

Thank you so much! Xx

I now have a minnow and a mollie in my 20 gallon aquarium. :) We moved them from a smaller aquarium. I'm going to be getting some more fish later, but probably not for a few more weeks. I was thinking about getting some corries, a small group of neon tetras, and a small group of zebra danios. My aquarium currently has 1 live plant in it (an amazon sword) in addition to some plastic ones, but I might get another live plant later.

I turn off the light at night and keep it on during the day.

1. Neons(though I'm still saying you should get 10 as more is better when it comes to tetras). Chances are they come in very small in size to the store and it might be better if they grow little before getting the gourami as they might get eaten othervise. Also they tend to be cheaper, so if you mess up the cycle and loose fish, less money gone.
2. Depends how the water parameters look like. If you are using bacteria product then probably no need. What brand is the filter start from?
3. Turn it off at night. Plants are 'awake' only certain time of the day, thus anything more is waste for them and more to the algae. 8 hours of light I believe is what's recommended. Timers are handy when it comes to switching lights on-off. :3
4. I'd get something that grows taller and from the ground, like vine type(check hygrophila family for example) or valisneria perhaps.
Can we pretend that the airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars?

Ah thank you so much, and I'll definitely take a look at those plants.
The filter start is Interpret.
As for the ten tetra - I have a ten gallon tank and I would like a dwarf gourami as well. Would they all be okay in there? I don't want to over do the bioload.

Thanks xx

Recently I've been thinking about getting a new fish for my 10 gallon tank. (Currently it only has a male betta fish in it) Not looking for anything like corydoras ATM. Any suggestions? And if I go away on holiday and have no one to feed them, will my automatic fish feeder feed both?

1. Neon tetras, for territorial reasons. Dwarf gourami a aren't super territorial but they can be, and he might chase them if he's in there before they are. I doubt he'd eat them, since he's a dwarf and they probably won't fit in his mouth, but I suppose it could be a possibility. Very rare though.
2. That's up to you. As of right now, there isn't any fish poop to dirty the tank so it's probably pretty clean. I know some people like to do it though as it does help with ammonia and nitrate levels.
3. Never leave a light on all night. There will be so much algae in your tank and it'll be awful. It's so hard to clean. I actually suggest maybe getting some otos to help with algae. I have 3 in a 5 gallon.
4. I can't remember the names of the plants I got otherwise I would suggest them for you.

Unfortunately I have no personal knowlegde of how that product, as it's not a brand that's sold around here.
3 more tetras make very little mess really, being as small as they are. I got 3 times bigger tank, with 30 tetras PLUS 13 corries and two otos. And that has been doing pretty good water quality vise. So I think you should be fine with 10 neons and a gourami. Just watch your feeding amounts, it's really common that people over feed their fish in the begining and that causes troubles with the water quality, rather than the fish amount itself. ^^

I've seen a betta eat small/juvenile neon tetras and I don't think dwarf gouramis aren't that different in size compaired to bettas. So I'd say if the store gets their neons as small as some of our local stores, the risk of them being eaten is there, if put together with a fish with habbits of eating smaller fish.

Some sort of schooling fish maybe then? But really depends on your betta and will he tolerate any other fish. And corries wouldn't fit a 10 gal btw, other than maybe the tiny/dwarf sized species.
With the feeder it depends... In theory I believe it should. But then there are things like are they all equally fast to get food, do they eat the same food, are they bottom/surface feeders(can you put tablets in the feeder for bottom feeders anyway?). If it's not very long holiday it's okay to not feed your fish and sometimes also better as then there will be less mess in the water.

I make my own dividers for my 10 gallons. I've only had a few problems with them that were caused by me not putting them in properly. I use the black plastic canvases from Walmart. They're about 2 dollars for a pack of three. What were you wondering about?

Sorry, just now seeing this. I made a divider for my 5.5 using plastic report binders and black needlepoint plastic mesh. Works great. However, the report cover/binders I cut to first firmly between the floor of the tank and the lip of the tank, and the tension holds the divider firmly in place, no problems. However, when I went to make a divider for a 10 gallon I noticed that the tank is 12 inches high (compared to the 10 inch height of my 5.5 gallon) and the plastic report binders are only 11 inches tall, so theyou wouldn't do me any good in the 10 gallon. Is the mesh itself stable enough without the plastic binders on the ends of the mesh?

If they're very very small, then yes. I've bought some black skirts that were just the absolute tiniest things before, but most of my neon tetras are fairly decent sized when I get them. But for a gourami, just look at it's mouth... it basically thinks of food as the equivalent to cats thinking about boxes. "If it fits, I sits" or in the gourami's case, "if it fits, I eats"
