We hardly see him move and he hardly eats anymore. Or we just never see him eat. Any ideas on what going on with him? I Got him at Pet Co. two years ago. When I brought it up with them 3 months ago they were surprised to hear that he had lived that long. But they couldn't tell me what was going on with him. I have been changing his water every 2-3 weeks or so. And when I change it I make sure to keep some of his old water with him. I read that that reduces stress on the fish. (Sorry that was all really out of sequence. I was just typing as it came to mind.) any help or advice?

How big is your tank, do you have a filter/heater, etc?

Two isn't that old for a betta; they usually live 3-5 years. You should probably be doing weekly water changes of about 15-20%, vs 2-3 week changes.

The tank is .5 gallons and we can't find a water heater sutable for that size tank. I also got him as an adult from the store. I guess I could try changing that amount of water weekly. Anything else I should try?

In a half gallon tank without a filter you need to be doing partial water changes just about every day. The problem is most likely a combination of dirty water/ammonia poisoning and being too cold.
If at all possible you need to get him a bigger tank as well as a filter and a heater. Half a gallon isn't really big enough for any fish. Go for an absolute minimum of 2.5 gallons, ideally 5 gallons+ The bigger the tank the easier it is to look after and the more stable the water quality which = a healthier fish.
You cannot eat love, nor buy a horse with it, nor warm your halls on a cold night

I have a 5.5 for my betta and it fits on my desk, so I promise that it isn't too big!
It'll keep your betta happy and you won't have to do changes so many times.

As others said, you should try to scale up your tank. 2.5 is the bare minimum. Is it winter where you live? If it is, that's probably why he's lethargic; he's getting too cold. Even though my house (and tanks) are heated my bettas still slow down a little during the winter.

Well, I gave up on not getting corries(lol) and got new corries yesterday(and some plants too) and I'm totally in love with them already. <3 Meet Corydoras elegans 'Nanus', loving the fact I can actually tell the males from females just by looking at the color(males are near black, while females are more gray shade). Sorry the quality sucks. I really don't take too much fishy pics and it's been forever since I last took some anyway... And excuse all the tetras, they were reeeeaally into that Cardamine lyrata(one of the new plants) on the backround for some reason. XD

These guys are extremely active and quite tiny compaired to my previous ones, which were metae, and they actually swim in the mid water level as well quite often. And they already managed to spaw this morning. >_<

A few years back my glowfish died of a fungus. It was white and fuzzy and it grew on them. Does anyone have an idea of what it might be? I've been very curious. I don't have pictures either.

I'm guessing it was cotton wool fungus? I white spotty type thing, or perhaps dropsy? A sign of organ failure.

I've been waiting over a month, but I finally was able to take this guy home yesterday. Isn't he a handsome little fellow?

Image

Also recently rescued this poor girl. I was approached by a Petco employee while picking up crickets for my spider. Since I go there quite often and talk frequently about my pets, he knew that I owned betta fish and he asked if I'd be willing to adopt one who was surrendered to them. Apparently her previous owners had tried to house her with another female, but it didn't work out. She isn't in the best shape, but I hope that she'll perk up soon.

Kat, that male is gorgeus. Never seen such purple, it almost looks like it's sort of glittery. If that color he has at the base of the tail was all over the body, I just might have died of over prettyness. XD
