i've been wanting to redo my two split ten gallon betta tanks for ages now, and it looks like i'll finally be able to soon! i would really like to finally throw out all the plastic plants and replace them with live ones but i'm having a hard time understanding how the best way to do this would be. my tanks have been setup for a couple months now, i'm worried about doing something wrong and harming my boys or the plants hgngn. so my questions are-

should i add a few live plants at a time or all at once? i'm guessing a few, so i can see how they do before adding the rest in.

i have sand substrate, would that be okay for plants to grow in or would i need a layer of something beneath the sand (like unfertilized soil)?

/runs back to researching

Welp, I have to move my tank again tomorrow because a roommate bailed. Why is moving a fishtank so tedious? .-.

I don't think it matters if you replace all at once or not. Actually doing it in little at time might be better and that way you'll also be able to see which plants thrive and which don't. So you won't accidentally end up with totally bare tank.
Sand is fine as substrate. If you want to use some sort of root fertilizer then there's several kinds of root tab etc which are pushed into the sand near the plant

Axolotl people, what do y'all have on the bottom of your tank? My two are around 3 inches long, and I was told that I shouldn't use sand in their tank until they are adults. True? I had multiple others tell me it would be fine, so just looking for more opinions.

Also any plant or hide recommendations? My girls deserve the best, so I want to get them lots of new goodies and make their tank look nicer and be nicer for them. Right now it's bare bottomed with two giant hides.

hmm, so it's alright to stick them in and they won't mess with the water parameters at all or anything? looks like i'll be getting myself some more sand then, too. (': also would you suggest root tabs or something like api leaf zone?

this is turning out to be a lot simpler then i first thought haha

Sand is A-okay IF you feed from the top of the tank by nightworms, or whatever else you feed. If it's bloodworms and on the bottom just leave it bare, or put tile in it. The bottom of my tank is bare but only because it's a 75 gallon, and I don't want to wait the 2 weeks it would take for the sand to settle, make sure you have that in mind too! I recently posted a picture ( either on here or the amphibian chat ) of my current tank and there are actually lots of cool things/plants you can put in a tank without having to use sand. I have hanging glass balls thats I have put fake plants in, but plan to put sand and live plants into. I used fishing wire and hung them from the top or side of the tank. They can also double as a hide for a smaller lotl.

You can also use flower pots filled with sand and plant plants in there so there's no mess and it's WAYYYY easier to clean. Sand as a substrate is just hard to clean considering how messy lotl's are

Hope this helps!

I'm planning on switching them to nightcrawlers. I can't stand the hassle of thawing out the bloodworms and everything. Plus I think I may be mildly allergic to them, I get really itchy after handling them.

I just really don't like the look of the bare bottom, so I want to figure out something to do. Haven't decided what though

Ive seen people use tile as the bottom. Like tile for kitchens or bathrooms they order and cute and itlooks nice. You can even paint them and make it whatever you want it!

Hai~
Questions about axolotls-
1.I'm confused. Are they fish or amphibians?
2. Is sand safe for axolotl flooring? Or is slate better?
3. Can they walk on land? Like, in the shallows? ( Just curious if I had one I wouldn't dump him out on the carpet or anything )
4. What is preferred temperature? How does one keep it that way?
5. Could an axolotl comfortably reside in a 20 gallon?
6. Are there any differences between axolotl color types, besides color?
I used to be sugar pixel .

1. They are amphibians but the amphibian chat is never up or working, and since they are in a tank and a lot of questions people have about them can be answered by most fish people, we just post here until someone says otherwise :P
2) Both are safe, sand is just much harder to clean.
3.) no they cannot get out of water, they are fully aquatic like fish
4.) they require very cool waters, ranging from 65-75, and most people just don't touch it. I have never needed to cool my water or heat it, but both can happen so you just need to keep an accurate thermometer in the tank at all times.
5) yes they can! A recommended amount for one adult is 10 gallons, but the bigger the better. Mine is in a 75 gallon
6) Nope, just color. Nothing special really, there is one type that I think glows under UV lighting, but I could be wrong :P
